The other side of that is how much will it cost to get their replacements?  It's entirely possible that the market price for average players just went up.  If Kutas for example is a 70 grade OL asking for $500K, the assumption is Sam thinks he can either get another 70 for less, or a higher graded player for the same money.  My fear is that he has no clue what the market value is for these players, and that we're either going to pay less for an inferior player or end up paying what these guys were asking and getting a similar player with less experience in the system.  This seems like an area where we could really use a GM.

TL/DR (I got confused typing it...I know some will reading it):  Do we trust Sam to accurately know the market value of the players leaving and the ones we're recruiting?

Lol. He is is pretty crafty. We get inferior players and then after going 2-10, he claims we didn't have the GM on staff but we will get it right next year. Another Two year pass.

I bet the GM will be a former player that everyone loved, but doesn't have the foggiest idea how to evaluate players.

He should, and I'm not meaning to imply that he doesn't know how talented his own players are, particularly starters and key contributors.

What I'm not convinced he knows is what the actual market value is.  Your market value is whatever someone is willing to pay you.  I'm just afraid we may end up paying as much or more and end up getting equal or lesser production.  Just thinking he might be basing this year's rates on last year's market.  Revenue sharing is probably going to raise the baseline across the board.

I'm pretty sure coaches are being told what player's are getting paid through agents. We should know what the value is. Thst doesn't mean weight not overpay. I think we might have to overpay for top talent if we are in a battle with top programs.

As a guy who has a bad back since his 20s, with nowhere near the physical responsibilities of a D1 athlete, I can understand and give them credit for not matching whatever Kutas and Hasz are getting. That is a total crapshoot. Throwing a lot of good money at players who are prone to miss significant time or might be out for the season as soon as fall camp.

I think all the o linemen are leaving for more money as teams see the need to be able to run. The football, bit in this case I think it's culture and respect.  I think that Blue Light Special comment really offended thes guys and they bailed on him.

I had a pretty good job in a family business some years back that I was confident I could retire from. They had recruited me from another good gig. We had a big sr staff meeting and the managing owner just lit up the room a tirade, even though our biz was beating plan. Said "all you should be aware you can all be replaced! Middle managers and execs these days a dime a dozen.!"

So that pissed us all off. I got a call from a headhunter a few days later and then I'm flying to San Francisco for an interview.  Gave my notice and the dude that said all that asks why I'm leaving, clearly upset his rockstar merchant is moving on. "Is it the money?  Getting to help run a billion $ company ?" Nope . "I bled for you and you said I was dime a dozen.  So buh bye". "Huh? I didn't mean you."  Welp you'll know better with your next guy

In fairness, I think it is little early in the whole NIL process for anyone to correctly guess what the "market value" of any player is.  There just isn't the history in college to judge things with any real basis.
