Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Oct 27, 2025, 03:21 PMI don't think it is so much in hiring any particular coach, I think it is about a commitment to salaries and NIL.  Make the right hire, whomever that might be, and commit to NIL, and we can be Indiana in a couple of years.  But it is more than just a coach.

Finally...

Quote from: bigpig on Oct 27, 2025, 03:24 PMI honestly don't have a clue who would constitute a "go big" hire.

Sure, there are names you can throw out, but none of them are either (A) available, or (B) would choose Arkansas over schools like LSU, Florida, or Penn State, etc. Whatever we could offer, someone else can match while also offering inherent resources that we simple can't.

Spot on. This is how we are going to end up with a retirement aged career position coach.

Yeah, part of it IS hiring the right coach.  I just don't have a name for you and I think there are multiple RIGHT coaches.  It is not a matter of taking ANY coach and giving him resources.  It is a matter of taking the RIGHT coach and giving him resources.  You give Sam Pittman the 1992 Dallas Cowboys and he goes 9-4 in the SEC.

Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Oct 27, 2025, 03:31 PMNeighbors says, (I know...I know) that we have $9 to $12 million per year to spend on a new HC with commensurate spending for a staff and NIL.  I don't know who you hire, but that kind of money ALONG WITH commitments to salaries and NIL would get some attention.

It isn't so much about the hire.  It's about blowing up the whole penny pinching poor mouthing atmosphere up there.

That is "going big" and it seems like we have kind of reached the point where it is do that, or just resign ourselves to being Vanderbilt of old.  Success isn't guaranteed but failure is if we don't do something different.  And "different" is not just changing coaches.

Other schools are going to be shitting out far larger buyouts...but that doesn't mean they are going to go to the poors section to find a new coach. So if we're spending that much that just means they are going to be spending that or more.

So basically we're going to be in the 7-10 million range because those numbers spouted by the Nabors of the world are ALWAYS wrong or misunderstood. MAYBE we've gotten enough Tyson type level of commitment and that's moved some dicks. There is basically no job anywhere in America that's impossible to win at with the right amount of money and influence. You can win and win quickly now with NIL/portal.

The Whale of a hire I can't even imagine who it would be and if indeed HY is gone then what are the odds we hire a "big time" guy?

"I got fired for using free speech" yea imagine getting killed over it

Barton Fink

I just want us to show a commitment. That cones with choosing the right coach AND giving him a fighters chance to succeed. If we don't give a new coach that commitment, we are gonna fail yet again.

vegashog

maybe yurachek is a reason there can't be a big time hire. i don't know, but if you fail see where college football was headed and then call out the fans and boosters, i can't blame any competent coach from being a little hesitant.

Agree with all that.  It never was as simple as giving Sam a pile of money, but hiring Saban with a dollar general roster isn't going to work either.
Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

Barton Fink

My point with giving Sam more money is I think BP could do something with it, and it makes the job more attractive to the next guy.

BASS

Nothing happening until Thanksgiving at the least unless you hire a guy not currently working.

Unless someone comes for Petrino and he's on our short list, which I think he is, then shit gets interesting. He's going to want some commitment from us before rejecting other offers. Auburn really was a must-win game.

Usafhawg

Who had Petrino on their bingo card way back when? Who thought there was ever a chance Calipari would come? There might be a big name out there still that we didn't know wants out of their current position.

Corn Pop

Hogs are 4 point favorites against Mississippi St.
I really don't care, Margaret.

No one worth a shit is coming for Petrino.

The Whyte Boar

If a few of our billionaire boosters make the same kind of commitment to football that they made to basketball, anything is possible.  The money required to fund a program is a rounding error to some of these guys.

MSU scored what 38? on Texas?  They may score 60 on us.

We scored 42 on Texas A&M, which did not foreshadow the Auburn game.

Did you see the MSU 4th quarter? They are our equal in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It may be a 10 overtime thriller on Saturday.

I was on my way back from South Dakota at the time, but saw bits and pieces.  Enough to know that MSU certainly fucked it up.

Agree.  Which is why I think he is the perfect guy.  Very solid coach you can get cheap.  Give him a ton of recruiting money and let him cook.  I don't agree with you that he can't put together a competent staff.  He will win 8-9 games a year minimum with 10-11 wins probable.  He can't put together playoff teams.

aaron

Big time?  Too many open jobs to get someone that big. We will hire Bobby unless there's an nfl assistant sending us love letters.

Again, who is "big"?  Kiffin?  Day?  Cignetti?  There isn't anyone "big" who is having success at their current school who is leaving for Arkansas.  No amount of money is going to cause that to happen.
