The more time goes, the more it looks like the mavs GM is just an idiot, unless there is some conspiracy, which I doubt. When everyone is confused about how this could happen, it's very likely a bad deal.

It's not like they traded someone who's a diva, thug or any bad representation of their franchise. Just don't think this one is ever going to make sense.

I'm not a huge NBA guy but living near Memphis, I do pull for the griz and love Ja but hell if they swapped Luka for Ja i could make sense of that from the Griz perspective, with Ja's off court issues.

Luka has to be one of, if not the, most valuable players in the nba considering his age.

A thing that pisses me off and maybe shouldn't, is that the best 5 players in the NBA over the last 2-3 years aren't even American. WHEN healthy, and a big IF with some of these, though:

Jokic
Luka
Giannis
Embiid
SGA

Tatum and Ant are the closest to breaking through. Lebron, Curry, and AD can still be up there on any given night, but are just too worn down to run it like they used to.

If one looks at Luca's situation, I think it's a combination of concern, stupidity, and money. 

Luca is great at scoring but cannot Will not play any defense.  Hes a future Wegovy ad with his ballooning weight.  Injuries.  Lack of interest in practice. Loving the good life. 

The $345 mil supermax contract to come was the factor that drove this from ownership.  It's a stupid rule because Mavs would have to pay it, and Lakers will not.  Luca's clock starts all over. That's a crippling amount of money to building a roster.

Stupidity/conspiracy.  The Lakers always get the big stars.  Jerry West. Wilt. Kareem. Shaq. Kobe. LaBron.  Does the league manipulate it?  Looks like it.  It's the only franchise that matters. 

I don't have an issue with a trade.  Talking to only one team?  Accepting such lopsided value?  That's criminal stupidity.  Nico somehow managed to move jerry jones off the dartboard. 

The Mavs to Vegas talk is less credible than money.  Cuban wants to get into the casino biz which is why he sold to them.  The ads are flying heavy but some are now saying they'll vote no if it ever gets on the ballot because of this trade.  I hate going by Winstar on 35 and knowing. 90% of the cars and $ in there come from Texans.

It is bad in Dallas.  First, the Doncic-AD trade, which obviously was a financially based decision, and AD gets hurt in his first game.  Now Gafford is hurt who has been playing well lately. There was talk on Memphis sports talk shows about the Grizz trying to get a big, Gafford or Portis were both mentioned before the trade deadline.

Portis would fit in perfectly in Memphis with his physicality and lunch pail type attitude.

The way this was handled, fan base treated, etc was just piss poor. The trade wasn't adequate for what they received in return.  You trade a legit top 5 player that's only 25 you'd better get more in return.

DFW will pass Chicago in 5-8 years to be the 3rd largest market, and then will be the LARGEST with a single team.  You don't leave that, the franchise value comes from the market it's in.
