Quote from: Show-Me Hog on Mar 18, 2024, 07:17 AMI saw a graphic of all the teams that declined the NIT, including Ole Miss, Indiana, Oklahoma, St. John's, Memphis.

In the age of the portal where there is no value in playing more games for a team that won't be next year's team, the NIT seems destined to die.

I saw that also.  I hadn't really thought about the fact that they don't care about the extra games since they won't have the same team next year, but it is surely correct.

Plus, the players have fulfilled their contractual obligations and have no interest in playing for free.

Ain't nobody playing for school/state pride, son!

Would that there were contractual obligations that would stop the bowl opt-outs.

It seems like entities giving out NIL deals could/should make the end date of the contract (and final payment date) the day after the last bowl game.  Or even better, the day after the last transfer portal period ends.

I know it's been said before but my understanding is these NIL deals cannot be contingent on performance. How and when the money is distributed I have no idea if it's in installments or all it once up front. I tend to think for most it's upfront and perhaps not entirely legally binding. In other words some of these dudes might not be getting what they were promised and may explain why some tend to portal in and out every year.

The only answer to these in-season and post season tournaments is going to be a POT OF GOLD and how legal that is and whatnot is not entirely clear currently. But it's coming. What will be interesting is if the NIT and some of these holiday tournaments end up having huge payouts to the winner while the NCAAT sits back on it's laurels and withers away over the next several years.

A time frame doesn't equal performance.  There is no reason the contract can't have a defined beginning and ending date.

I'd love to see a multi million dollar winner take all tournament go up against the NCAA.

Invite the teams before the conference tournaments and let the players decide which tournament to play.

I have a problem. I watched some NIT games tonight, as well as the 16 v. 16 game.

I have a question. How did Xavier get in with a 16-17 record? I know there were numerous opt-outs, I guess that's related. Could we have gotten in, one game under 500?

LSU just went down to North Texas State.  Have to admit I enjoyed it.

I was flipping channels but there was some sub 500 team in the NIT. So, yes, we could've gotten in.

Is this going to be the NCAA thread?

Virginia 5-29, 14 pts at half, no points last 9 minutes.

Scintillating.

Virginia went almost 14 mins without scoring a point. How does that happen?
