This is no surprise to me.  He's brought in 3 guards from the portal.  A guy like Dunning who saw no playing time this year is thinking his future looks dim.  And someone will probably pay him some money.

I think the only "4 year players" you will ever see these days will be someone like Devo. Reasonably highly rated in high school, but not the elite.  But someone who gets to school and outperforms his high school ranking, primarily through hard work and defense. Not quite good enough to attract the pro attention, but maybe a helluva good college player.  And many of them will really probably only be 3 year players.

I don't think schools can really do that so much since kids can leave at any time.  You might commit to a kid being a 4 year kid that gets PT the last two and he leaves after 2 or 3 so a wasted spot for those years.  The whole math is fucked up now and you can only count on a kid this year and not next.

I don't like it, but I agree. Everything is a one year contract at this point. The coach, the players. It's now "what is the best move I can make for this year for me" for all involved.

I don't like it from a simple point of it would be nice to keep a core group of guys from one year to the next. We'll still probably have some of that. I get that Dunning wasn't going to play and they wanted that spot to go to a more developed kid. Devo is one of those kids that was forced into action and shined when his number was called. The difference between a Devo and a lot of these kids is the opportunity under fire. One way or the next this roster is going to be loaded with "3 to 4 year guys" just not our 3 or 4 year guys and I guess that's my larger point. You recruited these guys for a reason why not remain committed to their development? This isn't meant to throw shade on the Muss staff but on the same token I fully anticipate Dunning was asked to portal as I expect others like the twins were told to pack their bags.

Well they wanted to be treated like adults regarding money.  If you are irreplaceable everybody will kiss your ass.  If not, you snooze you lose.

That's adult rule #1.  Employers pay lip service to your potential, they care about now.  Somebody else equal to him will sign now.

Will Muss play more than 8 people this year?  I say no, not on any regular basis.

For players that commit for four years the old fashion way, I'm not a fan of forcing them out for transfers if that's what happened.

But the minute they start focusing on NIL deals and what not, they put themselves in the professional athlete category, and it's all a business decision for both sides at that point.

I haven't seen anything about Dunning that would put him in the second category.  So it probably is a little sad, but that's just the current state of college sports.

It is, but he was probably going to get a new guy brought in ahead of him each year he was here, so going ahead and telling him was probably the best we could do for him.

Muss seems to be following the Bobby Petrino "my job is to recruit somebody better than you are" model.   I like it.

"That's the guy you don't need to worry about" to "this is the best thing for both of us" to you're out on the street. It's a business. I hate it but I hate losing more.

In a perfect world we would be taking some of these guys back when they've gone out and improved their games and wanted to return to be hogs later in their careers. A Chance Moore type guy could come back but I don't think he did much this past season playing at Missouri State or wherever.

It seems for Muss that if you cannot shoot but can play defense, you at least must be 6-5 or taller.

Every Sunbelt team has 6-2 guards who cannot shoot very well.
