the nil deals these guys get are thru contracts. the player is required to fill certain obligations - card signings, pimping a product, public appearances, etc.

you see some of them enter the portal and then take forever to announce where they are going, jefferson and sanders come to mind. they were waiting for their deal(s) to come to an end.

I agree you should be able to maximize your earning potential. It's just never affected the best sports model, college sports, in such a way before. At least not in a way that wasn't inherently illegal by NCAA rules.

The only group who can stop this is donors seeking players to promote their products, or boosters who want their teams to win games.

Winning is everything. No matter the cost. It's the American way.

I'm sorry Elvis......for all of it.

I get that the kids need to maximize their pay, but there can exist a universe where college athletes earn for their performance and the institutions (and the fans that are largely supporting their NIL) are protected with some kind of contractual enforcement.

It happens where I work all the time. It isn't a lateral move if you're getting more money and/or playing time.

In your interview process scenario - "A new opportunity presented itself and I felt I would be able to grow more with this opportunity". "The new position wasn't what I was made to believe it was when I accepted the position". All sorts of easy explanations for this.

Where I work there are TONS of people that do this. They are chasing the almighty dollar.

Yeah, it would be a bit different for me. In research, many projects can take the better part of a year or multiple years to complete. If I'm bouncing from lab to lab, I'm not likely to have any tangible results (published papers mainly) that would make me attractive to a new PI.

The capitalist system includes multi-year contracts, noncompetes, etc.

I see a lot of people talking about capitalism that have never lived in a truly capitalist system.

BUT - what if you could stay in the same lab, but just work for a different company? That is what happens here.

My first three years of college were at tthe different universities and no one gave a shit.

It's fair to allow student athletes the same courtesy.

Depends on the setup. I know people have transfered within places like the Salk Institute, but many of us (those that have yet to earn our PHD) work directly under what is essentially an independent contractor (even though many are under the umbrella of the university).

Been thinking about this too. Just like the talking heads began to minimize our hire by saying Cal was just beating the mob out of town, I'm sure they will belittle any championship runs as something different than what the true blue bloods are doing in the current climate. They'll do it "the right way", while we're buying manufactured titles.
