I'd just suggest not waiting too long.  I was needing mine just as Covid hit.  I got where I was staying off my feet as much as possible and I got weak.  That caused me to have more PT.

I had mine at the new UAMS orthopedic place.  I had to be there at 5:00 am and got it done and they put me in the car 5 hours and 15 minutes later and then back home.  I was at PT at 7:30 the next morning.

Dude your knees are shot. Shots, creams, herbs, pills won't restore your cartilage.  The fact you can still walk a bit is good for recovery instead of when you're really fucked up.

My wife had hers done in her 50's about 18 months apart.  She has really bad arthritis.  What I learned.

Don't do both at once.  I didn't know some orthopods still did this.

Use your morphine pump.  Stay ahead of the pain.

My wife when discharged went straight to serious rehab PT hospitals for a week or so.  It was far more intense than doing it at home and got her recovery started off the right way.  They find her new knee flexibility remarkable. 

Don't delay. Health can change quickly in your 60's.  You'll heal faster and easier now than in five years and certainly ten years.

I had my right knee done in December.  As mentioned by others, going hard at rehab (at PT and home) will pay huge benefits down the road.   

My decision to get it done was made after cortisone shots working the three previous years but not this year (also had the gel injection) to calm my arthritis and bone-on-bone.
