I dunno. Look I love Ryan mallett and he was a great football player but just knowing his ex was an only fans model makes me think he made a lot of bad decisions of the field.

I won't fight you, but I will respectfully disagree with you. 

While in general I agree with your sentiment about personal responsibility, the thing you seem to be leaving out of your argument is the rescuer or first responder.  Seems like a lot of these stories involve young children in trouble, and the one who ends up dying is the parent or bystander that tried to save them.  Its not like they get swept out and think "well I'm fucked" and accept the consequences.  They panic, yell for help, and flail about.  Who could stand by and watch a child drowned?  Even watching an adult drowned, no matter how reckless they may be with their own safety, would take an incredibly hard hearted person.  Putting your life at risk, or allowing your young children to do so, by ignoring warnings about hazardous conditions seems to put others lives at risk as well in most of these situations. 

I empathize with the sheriff quoted above.  He's probably dealt with the families of most of these drowning victims personally.  Its got to be emotionally exhausting and incredibly frustrating.   

Its hard to say "fuck 'em" when there is a child, or a person trying to save someone in trouble, involved.   

I'd have no problem fining or even arresting people that let their kids get in the water when the conditions are bad.  But if you're an adult, and you decide to go in when conditions are bad, or you're an adult, and you decide to try to go in to save another adult who went in knowing the conditions were bad, then fuck you, that's on you.  And believe me, I'm not forgetting the first responders.  I was a paramedic for 23 years.  It's undoubtedly the reason I'm so jaded about this kind of shit.

that's not true...they just have to notify you. When my aunt and step grandmother were killed in a traffic accident after my graduation the LR News tan a horrific story of a milk truck being in an accident and there was spilt milk...nevermind two people were killed by said truck but go ahead and make a story out of it

When it's a minor I think the that's absolutely the case.

When it's not minor it becomes a bit more discretionary depending on the cause of death.

In any case, if the responding LEO didn't notify the family FIRST, in this case his parents because he was unmarried, and instead notified the press, that's very poor form.

There was no apparent foul play, and it looks like a simple drowning.  I get momma Mallets anger at the news reporters, but it should also perhaps be aimed at the local LEO who barely gave her time to contact her mother.

For some reason, NWS/NOAA has not added Mallet's drowning on 6/27 in Destin to its statistics, even though it lists data through 7/1.

I can see it easily could have been a riptide but since this is a high profile death and there was no warning for it, it's a CYA move to declare it a "simple drowning". But to prove this will be especially difficult.
