This is all a fucking tragedy, but you shouldn't be able to prevent people from going in the ocean or be able to fine them when they do.  I mean, it's the fucking OCEAN, for Christ's sake.  By all means, put up all the flags and do everything you can to warn people, and if they want to ignore the warnings and risk it anyway, fuck 'em.  Seems like a natural right to me.  Fight me.

let them drown if they can't follow the rules and use good judgement.

It is why they have to put instructions for idiots on everything now. Fire is hot, don't eat the pizza box, don't drink the oil in your car, etc.
Well, shit...

This is exactly right. Swimming in the ocean carries life threatening risks.

Issuing swim warnings also come with human judgement and interpretations that are going to have varying degrees of accuracy. I just think it's crappy for the officials to state the next day that there were no dangerous currents when he drowned. Obviously there were and this sounds like a page right out of Jaws right before the 4th of July.

I am swimming with sharks and stingrays next week...I am unsure about it but I'll assess once I get there whether I wanna jump in or not

Sharks are way overpopulated in the Gulf now. They are overprotected. Can hardly get a grouper off the bottom now without paying the tax man. I hooked an amberjack last summer that had to be 60 pounds. I don't wanna see the shark that left only the head.

Quote from: jdcatty on Jun 28, 2023, 06:12 PMRemember the timing.  Nutt was fired shortly after the last game of the year (if I recall, a victory over LSU).  Michigan's last game of the year was about the same time, and Mallett was still getting in games for Michigan.  In fact, he started a game one week during the season for Michigan, and was on the phone the following week with the Arkansas coaches. Mallett couldn't announce a transfer earlier than that.  At that time, we would have been blasted by the NCAA and Michigan for tampering. Heck, I don't remember, Michigan may have had a bowl game in there.   But the die was cast for Nutt before that LSU game.

Nutt could've been crowing privately to those who were in control of his fate, without risking a tampering claim.

nutt was at ole miss 48 hours after "resigning".  no way that deal wasn't in the works for at least a month prior.

mallett was never going to play for nutt.

Quote from: jdcatty on Jun 28, 2023, 09:12 PMIt was probably me.  I have been a member of Woopig for many years, but for a while I posted almost exclusively on Oinkx.  Dumb me.  Thought it was kinda cool to be on an "invitation only" type board.

Rod and his bunch turned out to be such a bunch of fringe lunatic liberals it was disgusting.

I still look at Oinkx on occasion but not often.  It is a bunch of anarchists and radicals.

What once was a good site is now in ruin.

You know, in the end, an autopsy may show that his heart just gave out. They were struggling for a while. There are a lot of variables that could have happened. Sad deal, anyway.

I've thought the same thing. I doubt there is an autopsy since there were a lot of witnesses to it not involving foul play and an obvious drowning.

This is the way it should be, but if someone drowns and no one told them not to go into the ocean, there are plenty of folks out there who would try to sue the city, state, etc.  I'm sure they are just trying to cover their butts.

I won't fight you, but I will respectfully disagree with you.

While in general I agree with your sentiment about personal responsibility, the thing you seem to be leaving out of your argument is the rescuer or first responder.  Seems like a lot of these stories involve young children in trouble, and the one who ends up dying is the parent or bystander that tried to save them.  Its not like they get swept out and think "well I'm fucked" and accept the consequences.  They panic, yell for help, and flail about.  Who could stand by and watch a child drowned?  Even watching an adult drowned, no matter how reckless they may be with their own safety, would take an incredibly hard hearted person.  Putting your life at risk, or allowing your young children to do so, by ignoring warnings about hazardous conditions seems to put others lives at risk as well in most of these situations.

I empathize with the sheriff quoted above.  He's probably dealt with the families of most of these drowning victims personally.  Its got to be emotionally exhausting and incredibly frustrating.

Its hard to say "fuck 'em" when there is a child, or a person trying to save someone in trouble, involved.

Not to mention the business side of it.  Each rescue attempt costs the responsible entity money, and puts the first responders in harm's way.
