If the bets he placed had nothing to do with Texas Tech, why should he get a lifetime ban?  Why should he be punished at all?

Because he placed bets on his own team, while he was at Indiana. That's an automatic lifetime ban by NCAA rules.

Paying players used to be against the rules.  It's a stupid rule and should be done away with.
