For your 6th or 7th choice and a guy any other SEC team would've been disappointed with.

Hey, seat filler is an easy gig when you can get it

If hog fans had been given 3 or 4 days notice for a weekend event we would have filled BWA too.

Possibly, but I really don't think so.
Apparently retarded member of the "fucking old people" crowd as defined by Swahili Steve.

Agree on that.

Kentucky fans circled the wagons and supported their hire. Not sure we would have came close to doing the same but he was one of their own so that makes a difference. Ask yourself our reaction to Darrell Walker being hired? Yeah Pope is more accomplished as a college coach but Walker could well have been the backup plan to the backup plan.

50/50 chance Pope does better there than Calipari during his tenure here.

Hot take. You could be right or you could be wrong.

AporkalypseNow

Pope hasn't won an NCAA game yet and thus far doesn't look like he can get a single player or recruit to stay.

He may not do better than Pel did.

Cal is known for his dribble drive motion offense. So maybe it makes sense that Joe Johnson would be asked to be on the staff in some capacity. That might mean Ronnie Brewer is not going to be retained.

did johnson graduate? have to have a degree to be a bench coach.

i read he's plugged into the aau scene so i bet that's where cal knows him from.

yes, the university requires at least a bachelor's degree to be an assistant coach. same for most all p5 programs.

Thin Red Swine

Quote from: DirkPiggler on Apr 12, 2024, 11:48 AMConnected boosters have said that Hunter let them know as early as football season (about the time he was looking for contributions to possibly buy out Pittman) that there was a strong possibility that he would need to find a new basketball coach at the end of the year.  I don't know if Muss told him, or if he was just hearing about Muss reaching out to all these programs with dead coaches walking and put two and two together.

I think early on Muss at least tried to embrace the culture and the university.  Remember him showing up at the baseball regionals (supers?) wearing the size XXS Sunday cream baseball uniform?  And flying to Dallas to watch Sam's best team kick the shit out of the sheep fuckers?

The trouble with guys like Muss is that they burn really hot for a while, then flame out.  When he was engaged fully and motivated Muss was as good as we could hope to have in that role.  Once that drive waned he became average at best.  A disengaged Muss isn't a whole lot better than Stan Heath at the Xs and Os.

I also think that when things went south midseason last year and pretty much all year this one, instead of looking inward he started to get a sense that this program wasn't good enough to help him reach his goals.  He told people that this year's team was good enough to get to the Final Four before the season started.  When that didn't work I don't think he accepted his role in it not happening.

He will do really well for a while at USC.  Like at Arkansas after 25 years of mediocrity, it won't be hard to show an immediate impact at a school with no real history.  The marketing genius in him will turn it up, and he'll have Snoop, Will Ferrell and others sitting courtside.  But eventually the long dick of reality will slap him upside the head again, and he'll be off to his next challenge...building a winner at Long Beach State or someplace similar.

Nice summary.

I said it before that he will be at USC for four or five years, then head for his retirement job at his Alma mater. He's always been upfront that someday he'd go back there.
