1988 for the "W." (HW)

Let THAT sink in.

EDIT: And there were only three other before that, including the biggest one.

It's an interesting question. I went back to '64 to plot it out. Generally we've been middling to shitty in election years with the exception of 64, 68, and 88. We've also had 4 new coaches in election years (Hatfield, Petrino, Smile, Pittman).

1964: 12-0
1968: 10-1
1972: 6-5
1976: 5-5-1 (JFB's last year)
1980: 7-5
1984: 7-4-1 (Hatfield's first year)
1988: 10-2
1992: 3-7-1 (Citadel, welcome to the SEC bitches)
1996: 4-7
2000: 6-6
2004: 5-6 (year 1 of Nutt's 2 year pass)
2008: 5-7 (Petrino's first year)
2012: 4-8 (Smile year)
2016: 7-6 (beginning of the end for Bert)
2020: 3-7 (Pittman's first year)

This is a classic Houston Nutt type game where we would go down there and beat them by three touchdowns unexpectedly. I don't think Sam is half the coach Nutt was when it comes to motivation.  Sam seems to have checked out.  In hindsight Nutt deserves some credit for being able to motivate a team at specific times even when he seemed to have checked out himself.  Nutt was ten or twelve IQ points from being a fabulous coach.

If Sam somehow pulls one out this week, take out a home equity loan and drain your kids' college accounts and put everything you can on Ole Miss next week.

Pittman is where Bert was in 2016, where every single week was a swing back and forth between win and loss because we'd spend the week after a win sniffing our farts and reading our press clippings. That year we went 10 straight weeks alternating wins and losses. It was something to behold.

I do agree with that.  Sam is way more predictable than Nutt was.  You can literally see Sam let off the gas and then go "Oh shit" and put the peddle down after a loss or close win over a nobody.

But whereas Nutt's shtick was still moderately working even in his last year where we went 8-5 and beat LSU, I think Sam's is really close to failing altogether.  I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us lose out in conference.  Of course, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see us win a couple more either.

That is really going out on a limb there.

It's Sam Pittman. Regardless of which side of the tree I edge out on limb, he is going to saw that motherfucker off behind me.

I calculated the answer in my head then went back to see the instances prior to that (just back to '64).

I had a more cynical recap:

2020 Sam's Mulligan
2016 Bert and His Five Finger Discount Crew
2012 Smile
2008 BMFP Year 1
2004 Dale Meh
2000 What Happened in Vegas
1996 Found On the Road Dead
1992 Eat Crowe
1988 SWC Champs
1984 Liberty Bowl Runner Up
1980 Hall of Fame Bowl Champs
1976 Broyles Swan Song
1972 Broyles Meh
1968 Broyles Sugar Bowl Champs
1964 THE Champs!

If your descriptions were a graph, it'd be a downward trend for sure.  A few anomalies, but you could still ski down it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to make a prediction.

They scored 28 against Florida, 31 against Georgia, and 24 against A&M in the last 3 games.  We might need 35 to beat them.

Hogs roll.

Unless someone says someone else captured the vibe of the win better, I think this is it.
