Time to retire this thread to the classics, I suppose.

Does the new site have a classics section? Might need to get on that.

We were between a rock and a hard space after the Morris debacle.  We were competitive when Odom was (in my opinion) essentially the head coach.  It started going to shit after he left.  I also think that is why they brought Petrino in but he didn't have control over defensive coaching personnel.

I suspect upon his arrival Petrino saw how bad Sam really was as a head coach. He knew immediately there wasn't anything he could do to fix the situation so he decided to let the entire thing resolve itself organically.

I doubt that.  Petrino hates losing.  My guess is he tried repeatedly to help make things better, and it didn't work because Sam loved his coaches and players too much to be mean or hard on them.

this. I also think he was forced to deal with hiring Bobby or he would have been canned. He knew the writing was in the wall and waited till Sam just completely fell apart and knew he was next in line to step in and do as he wanted
Yep. I'm not trying to be a dick about it. It could have lived. It didn't. Not by my choice. -Elvis

Nope.  Even for the most Type A, once you see you can't effect change you either quit or move up to the coaches box, stay out of the way, and let nature do its thing.  I think things are probably unraveling just as BP thought they would.  And he simply waited for his time.

I have no doubt that Bobby knew what was coming.  I just think the notion of him biding his time or throwing in the towel or throwing games (not that you've suggested that - I've seen that tripe all over the internet by detractors) or playing the snake in the grass (again not suggesting you said that), is nonsense.  I think he probably tried his best to help fix shit, and I'd venture a guess that it caused some rifts between he and the rest of the staff and maybe even Pittman.  I'd say it's more likely that Pittman refused to change things or follow his advice.  Those things may have contributed to his decision to move to the box this year.  Knowing Bobby's general demeanor and attitude when it comes to losing, I have a very hard time picturing him just standing aside and letting it all fail.  But maybe he did...

I also have heard rumors that since he has been here this time he has still been playing that whole protect the offense at the cost of the defense thing he used to do in practices his first time.  Stuff like not tackling to the ground, etc.  So that may also be a contributing factor, especially between he and TWill.  (If true, that is).

Nope. Was absolutely not forced to hire him. Bobby and Sam were friendly prior to.
