Arkansas - LSU Game Thread

Box scores don't always tell the story but we had Brazile and Davis making 3s but proceed to not get them more shot opportunities. Wagner with 0 assists, doesn't shoot it enough usually gets to the rack and scores but that's mostly what he's been doing. We're not getting him "catch and shoot" in this offense. Everything seems to go thru Fland and his stat line looks ok but he's p laying 38 minutes and is ball dominant. Theiro gets his touches and Aidoo too decent stat lines.

All in all this team makes way too many mental gaffes and just isn't very good defensively.

Big Zilch came in and got tossed to the floor by a 170lb guard there in the 2nd half. Holy shit just go back to the bench.

Big turning point was the F1 on Brazile for a set screen. They make both free throws, then get the ball back and hit a 3. Killer. He leaned into the guy and gave a bit of chicken wing but damn. Then not long after I saw about mid-court an LSU guy set up a wedge block and Fland or one of the other guards ran right into that motherfucker. It was probably legal but still pretty brutal.

Bottom line these guys don't play with any real basketball IQ and as someone else said we're mid-way into the season and it still looks like a rec league pick up game. Is Cal still having fun? What a joke.


Back to the box score: Aidoo shot 3 threes and nailed 0. Theiro took an open one and missed.. Ok I can live with that. Big Zilch took one and flopped. Brazile made 2 triples out of 2 in his 10 minutes of action. So math and all that that's 7 attempts out of your "bigs" and 2 makes...that's not taking care of possessions very well IMO.

Everyone got caught up in the Chicken Nuggets with this team and nobody listened to Cal when he said this will take some time. I guess he wasn't kidding at all. No really if there's money this shouldn't be taking that much time at all. We got shitty over paid basketball players.

Has Arkansas ever had a really good team without one of the main guys being from Arkansas?  I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I could be mistaken.

In the Day/Mayberry/Miller era who was the main guy on those teams from Arkansas? Not one of those three.

The early 80s teams only had role players from Arkansas.  Guys like Balentine, Ricky Norton and US Reed were key contributors but the stars were Walker (Chicago), Robertson (Ohio), Scott Hastings (Kansas) and Kleine (Missouri).

I know it's a different time but Nolan recruited kids that fit his system that had chemistry with each other once they got on campus. I'm not sure what Cal's system is other than getting kids to the NBA. We better figure it the fuck out or we're looking at 2-16 dead in the eyes.

Does anyone on the team have a good +/- in the first four SEC games? He hasn't been amazing but I haven't had a problem with Brazile this season. He should have played more than 11 minutes last night. I never want to watch Big Z play basketball again.

I agree on Brazile. He has been playing well and giving effort all year. Last night's 10 minutes were a joke. And I think most of that came in the first half. I don't remember him being in at all in the 2nd half til that final minute. Brazile, Thiero, and Boogie should be on the floor together as much as possible every game. Throw darts to pick the rest. The rotations don't make sense most of the time anyway.

Brazille had a "awful" night? I've never been a big fan of Adam's analytics for basketball.  They leave a lot to be desired.

In 10 mintues Brazille scored 6 points, went 2-3 from the field (2/2 from three), had 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 turnover.

In comparison...

Boogie: In 38 minutes he had 19 points, went 6-17 from the field (3/5 from three), had 1 rebound, 5 assits, 1 steal and 2 turnovers.  35% from the field is horrendous. 

Mabye Brazille wasn't good on defense in his 10 minutes.  Stats don't show that part of the game.  But, to say he had an aweful night sure seems odd.  If anything I'd say had he played 38 mintues he would have been our top scorer.

Davis had a much worse game overall as compared to Brazille.

+/- is hardly the end all be all when it comes to statistical analysis and can be misleading. He had 6 points on 2/3 shooting with 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 turnover in 10 minutes. That's not awful, holy shit.

My gut tells me the ball needs to go thru Wagner with Fland and Davis being the off guards. Cal's offense has mostly been about dribble drives and I think that's what we're trying to fuck around and do but the other guys on this team are ass at setting screens and back doors and all that kind of shit. Everything is a circus shot or something jacked up. Our other young freshman are foul magnets. Richmond was missed last night his 4 fouls really killed his game. Knox was basically a no show.

In years past with a loaded roster we didn't know what to do with those 9th thru 13th guys but for my money I'd rather get legit playable D1 guys on the roster and let god sort it out. Clearly we didn't because no way Cal is just going to sit there if he thinks he can get something out of <checks notes> Melo Sanchez that we're not getting out of somebody else that's getting paid to suck.
