Also stay away from One Hour Heating and Cooling if they are in your area. These are considered white shirt companies or other words their sales techs wear white shirts because they don't figure on doing any real work.

Anything "Inverter" and "Variable Speed" is going to provide a lot of comfort and efficiency (at premium up front cost) but the downside is it's gonna be extremely proprietary parts and the manufactures have been known to pull support on a product within the warranty period >See Rev's post on Carrier.  The dealer is left holding the bag of dicks.

This kind of equipment is essentially the same tech that goes into the ductless mini-splits scaled up to a whole house. It's great and all but if she goes down she goes down hard. The days of swapping a contactor or capacitor are over at that point. Whatever they do be sure to have them provide surge protection both indoor and out. If you have a lot of brown outs I'd ask for the good kind that protect against voltage dips and spikes.

Avoid Lennox, York, and Nortek products

Trane, ICP/Carrier, Ruud/Rheem are I'd go for over that other shit but as I told you in dm...it's all fairly shitty now. We sell a Chinese product called Oxbox (made by Midea) that I'd put up against a lot of the big name competitiors. It would especially be perfect if you aren't married to that house for more than a few more years. But they pretty much max out around 16 SEER2. It's like a poors version of the inverter Bosch equipment but whatever.

Thanks.

They called me yesterday and said because I have a zoned downstairs, I'd need to step up to Trane's 18 seer unit for the downstairs.  Another $3500.

The pricing on these things pisses me off.  I'm had a family member who has since passed but was the controller for Carrier.  He said it costs penny's on the dollar to build these residential units.

HOGSRUNWILD

That is what has me confused as well, especially the AC side.  It is a compressor pump, fan, tubing/intercooler expansion valve and then a core  at the other end for the air to blow over the cold as fuck liquid...ok, bit more complicated, but not really.  The concept is fucking stupid simple.  It compresses the "fluid", fluid being gas/liqid, which heats it, then cools it some with fans and then expands to super cool it and then sends it to other end for house air to blow over it to heat it back up, pump it back outside to compress and start all over again.

Why would something so simple be so fucking expensive, especially when it doesn't have to be especially small or whisper quiet or anything.  It just needs to work.

For starters...

Regulations
Planned obsolescence
Share holders

The new(er) regulations just so happen to "force" manufacturers to produce this shit with needless do-dads, electronics, and safeties.

The efficiency standards mean the equipment is being built physically larger with thinner wall tubing or micro channel coils (shit) and shitty ECM blower motors that have little or no tolerances to running outside of spec where as the old shit was over engineered to take abuse.

If we installed all this shit the way the factory dreamed it up every house would get new duct that's probably gonna be much larger than previous. Then you get into sizing equipment properly...the mentality now is much different than when I started. The older equipment didn't give a fuck the new equipment you better be a lot closer to spec or you'll be baby sitting it...hence shit is expensive

A few years ago the state introduced new regs that was supposed to run off the unlicensed hacks yet today you can go to any hardware store and purchase a mini split for $700, watch a yt video and go to harbor freight to buy a few tools and have it done in a afternoon. Most dealers will cost out a job like that by figure out what they would charge minus the dead cost of equipment. So if you are normally at 5k for a little split you would charge 4k ish and the client isn't hiring you they'll suddenly have a buddy. Meanwhile I have to take things like not burning your home down into account and that comes at a cost.

I walked out to my shed this morning at 10:00. Worked on something for about 15 minutes and had sweat running from my forehead to the crack of my ass. It is HOT!
Well, shit...

We're a little worried about the weather tonight for the Post Malone/Jelly Roll concert.  KNWA says it's going to be awful, but the Weather Channel has it at about a 40% chance of storms.
