At least here there are several known companies that are big hvac companies that scam people with high prices and are just awful. In Denver you're fucjing stupid if you use applewood beating and air.

yep, or mini splits.  I bought one of those for the deer cabin after the window unit shit the bed.  It was $400, took an hour or so to install, and keeps a 600sf terribly insulated cabin pretty comfortable.

$31K for a downstairs unit (4-ton, 17+ Seer, Variable Speed) and an upstair unit (2-ton, 17+ Seer, Variable Speed).

The other company was $48K ($53K before the cash discount) with the downstairs unit (4-ton, 17+ Seer, Variable Speed) and an upstair unit (2.5-ton, 15+ Seer, Single-Stage).

Difference between small mom and pop vs large corporate owned joint.  I feel bad for the people who don't know better than to get multiple quotes.

I would like to offer a word of caution on the variable speed units.

I had the best five ton unit Carrier makes (as Gibraltar told me) and in 2015 when I bought it, I think it cost me about $5,500 for the unit.  It was pretty cool, had a wall mounted t-stat about the size of an iPad, that was programmable from my phone and had all kinds of cool features.  It would even tell you how much it cost you to heat or cool your home each month/week/day, however you wanted to look at it.   I think that unit costs about $12k now.  It was a dream for the first 6 years.  It was amazingly quiet, lowered my energy costs significantly, and had no issues with it.  Then the inverter took a shit.  They warranted it, but cost me $700 to have it changed by a "certified tech" (dude was a fuckin tweaker) and it lasted about 6 months, went out again, rinse lather, repeat three more times, then they said they would not cover it again, so I said some bad words, ripped that shit out, and replaced it with an old school standard technology model that cools nicely and can be replaced for a third of what that one was. 

All that to say be careful and make sure you get something with a solid warranty.

Air Tech is like a meme on some of the hvac groups on Facebook if that tells you anything. Also stay away from One Hour Heating and Cooling if they are in your area. These are considered white shirt companies or other words their sales techs wear white shirts because they don't figure on doing any real work. 


Anything "Inverter" and "Variable Speed" is going to provide a lot of comfort and efficiency (at premium up front cost) but the downside is it's gonna be extremely proprietary parts and the manufactures have been known to pull support on a product within the warranty period >See Rev's post on Carrier.  The dealer is left holding the bag of dicks. 

This kind of equipment is essentially the same tech that goes into the ductless mini-splits scaled up to a whole house. It's great and all but if she goes down she goes down hard. The days of swapping a contactor or capacitor are over at that point. Whatever they do be sure to have them provide surge protection both indoor and out. If you have a lot of brown outs I'd ask for the good kind that protect against voltage dips and spikes. 

Avoid Lennox, York, and Nortek products

Trane, ICP/Carrier, Ruud/Rheem are I'd go for over that other shit but as I told you in dm...it's all fairly shitty now. We sell a Chinese product called Oxbox (made by Midea) that I'd put up against a lot of the big name competitiors. It would especially be perfect if you aren't married to that house for more than a few more years. But they pretty much max out around 16 SEER2. It's like a poors version of the inverter Bosch equipment but whatever.

Find you a Vietnamese Hook-Up.  No Joke, BleedInRed.  You are in Houston, so I know there are tons.  We have one.  My wife made friends with this lady that is a "general contractor".  In short, she is a hookup.  She fixes your problems and outsources the labor to various Vietnamese companies and they seem to do really good work and WAY, WAY cheaper than anything else we have found.  I mean, by like half or more.  They don't speak fuck-all for English, but they work like crazy and seem to know their shit, so you need a hook-up to manage it. 

I have used her for 2x water heaters with hot water recirc and some more stuff and it was less than half of what other places quoted.  I'm not even sure how they are covering the cost of the materials.  Oh, and she is smoking hot too.   She is likely either fucking the dudes to get them to eat the cost or they are stealing the parts to do the work so cheap, who knows.

How do we feel about Goodman units?  That's what I'm looking at. Think it's a 13.8 SEER.

This is a quote to remove a 3 ton complete system and a 4 ton complete system and replace them with a new Goodman R32 refrigerant based evaporator coil and condensing unit with 80% gas furnaces. We will remove and replace the existing drain pans, re tie into drains, re run gas and gas flex upstairs in the furnaces, we will tie back into existing vent pipe with new vent pipe, we will air seal the system to prevent any attic air entering conditioned air space, we will do sheet metal work to ensure we have enough space for the new equipment, we will re run copper to clean it up outside and inside, run new high voltage whip kits and pigtails for the units, pressure test with nitrogen to ensure no leaks are present, pull a vacuum to 500 microns to pull any non condensables out of the line set and to ensure a second time there are no leaks in the system nor the line set. We will re insulate copper lines, re run low voltage wires and wire them in correctly. We will wire the leak detection system into the circuit board from the evaporator coil. We will add float switches in the new drain pans as well as inline switches in the drains to prevent any water damage in the future. We will properly charge systems with r32 to the systems desired sub cooling/superheat.

10 year parts warranty
20 year heat exchanger warranty
1 year labor warranty.
