Lanny Van Eman was the coach in 72.  Waller's last season was 1970.

Of course, you are correct.  My mistake completely.  Van Eman actually was improving the situation some, with Martin Terry shooting his "lean in and get fouled jump shot" later perfected by George Gervin.  Terry had quite a 'fro.

This pales in comparison to you guys' actual cool stories, but Duddy Waller's son used to do a little part time work for me.  He's a friend of a longtime family friend. 


He lived in Texarkana last I checked.

Interesting.  I have never heard that he lived in Texarkana, but I sure don't know everyone in town.

I kinda fear we have a Florida-Tennessee style beatdown coming today on The Plains.

They have talent, they're 0-2, their backs are against the wall, and they're at home. And we're due a clunker.

I was at the double flip off game courtesy of Bullock. I was sitting behind the Hatters and they were insane that night. Remember, they were only about 6 feet behind the Tech bench.

I went to Grad school at Tech. They played BBall in a stadium exactly like Barton Coliseum, just a bit more seating. They called it the bubble. Tech fans were loud but nothing like the insanity at Barnhill.

I remember going to a game against Baylor when van Eman was coach. Barnhill was half full. We scored over 100 and lost. One of the trademarks of his; score a lot rest on D. Eddie was the opposite.

Lanny Van Eman was the guy that was the catalyst for getting basketball out of the Duddy Waller cesspool.  He was young and had a good tv show which taught me some basketball.  It got JFB to notice and he had a little foundation to recruit Eddie.

The bounce pass to Ewin last night was unbelievable. He may be the best passer I've ever seen. His passes always hits the guy in the perfect spot.

Adjust expectations.

Beat Tech, Louisville, Tennessee, play respectably against Mich St and Duke.

We could be good. Really good. Really really good.

Look like shit against Auburn and 3/4 of the game against Georgia.

Hold serve at home, try to steal a game or two on the road, and try to peak/make noise at tournament time.

As is typical for Ford, it's overanalyzed, but here's the key point which I think is legitimate given how many minutes Acuff is playing. Against Georgia, the whole team seemed to run out of gas after fighting to catch up.


Acuff is very productive...but Arkansas as a team is a shocking 9.5 points per 100 possessions worse when he's in the game. That's the worst of any player...

So that's the statistical basis for the "conversation"...I'm not arguing for anything ridiculous like benching Acuff. But I think something needs to be done to help him at both ends. At a minimum, he shouldn't be guarding the opposing ballhandler if that guy is one of the best players on the opposing team (Vanderbilt's point guard is its best player, if you're peeking ahead at the schedule). And given that DJ Wagner running the offense tends to activate other teammates while helping the defense, maybe giving Acuff more breathers and letting Wagner take more possessions as primary ballhandler would help save Acuff for the late-game, where can actually use his clutch ability.

And that's really the thing. Acuff has been up for every moment this season, so it's not fair to run him out of gas so he's exhausted when the Hogs need him most. His ability to win an isolation and go get his own shot is an incredible skill late in a game, but it's harder for him if he's had to manage every offensive possession and guard a dynamic opponent.

I think we walk into every game thinking we can showtime everybody.

Then when a team like Houston or Auburn or Georgia punch us in the mouth, our attempts at showtime result in turnovers, bad shots, and an immediate double digit deficit, and we burn all of our gas trying to get out of the hole.

Then we destroy a team like South Carolina mid-week, get all show time-y feeling again, and repeat the whole process.

Considering Acuff is averaging 33 minutes a game, this is a stupid analytic.

Any team with a couple of mens inside are going to give us trouble. Pringle is weak on both ends of the floor, but really gets pushed around on D. Knox is our best post defender at 6'8.

I keep reminding myself that March is all that matters.

I agree with Ford that we should have someone else cover the point, and allow Acuff to conserve some energy.  I was thinking Mitchell would be quite a nuisance against the point, but he has also flat out embarrassed some opposing post players by blocking their shots. 

We seem to be effective in a zone with Brazile out front too.  He's really an indicator on how a game's going to go.  He disappears offensively a lot in the losses, and looks all world in the wins.
