Someone can start a 2026 NFL thread but to no surprise

Cowboys/Giants on SNF to start the season.

Texzilla

They bring more eyeballs than any team.  NBC would have hem every Sunday if they could.

Nine fucking overseas games.  I hate them and wish the NFLPA would stop them.

International games are all about growing interest and therefore revenue.

Futbol and Formula One global viewership contracts are worth more than NFL tv contracts.

You want the nflpa to say "no" to more money for players?

I get why they do them but they still suck ass and they're almost always non competitive.

There will never be enough interest in American football outside the U.S. to make it worth while.  It will never be a grass roots game elsewhere because it's too expensive.  There's never going to be high school or college football programs in Germany or Spain or Brazil.  No real fan base.  There will never be a huge nfl contract for games on German or British TV.

The players don't get a dime extra for playing international games. Those games actually take away from players in taxes and the fact networks subtract the costs of these games from the contracts.   Do you know how the nfl tv contracts and CBA work?   The networks have to spend a ton of money to set up for a single international game with lousy camera and replay setups.

Does the league office get money from these games? Possibly but unless you're an owner like khan stick in a shit market, the overseas games cost owners big money.  Herey gets 8 home games a year in a stadium he's invested $1.5 billion into, not counting his lease payments to Arlington.  Losing those 1000000 fans on game day hurts the team, the city, and the folks that work the game.

Futbol and car racing are universal sports and aren't anything like the unique sport of football.

You're probably not wrong tex. But that isn't going to keep the NFL from trying their damnedest.

I doubt seriously the NFL is losing money playing international games.  And I couldn't give a shit that the players don't get paid any extra for their all inclusive paid trip to Ireland to play one game.  The other 16 games worth of pay more than make up for it.

I feel like them increasing the regular season games was mostly so they can kick over games to an International market. Is it profitable...idk about that I'm sure it's a big deal to go play a game in London or Berlin or Rio, Tokyo or Madrid...where ever they go it's going to give those international audiences a chance to see something they may never get to see in their life time so it's a big deal. No that may not create enough interest for those local areas to start high school football. If we're being honest the sport is widely considered unsafe on a global scale because...it's unsafe, expensive, promotes barbaric tendencies etc. Not exactly something Beijing wants to promote on the reg probably.

To me it always looks weird playing these games overseas is because the venues aren't really suited for American Football. The crowds usually look like they are way too far back from the field. The energy just isn't the same as if it were in any number of NFL towns. The german fans usually really get into it though. But they probably still bring in a ton of eyeballs locally and people watching from home. So it's not really a fail for the NFL at all. For us over here it's waking up early on a Sunday and seeing the game on and that's not something most of us are dialed in on but there ares till going to be domestic audiences and when they are in those time zones I assume the games are broadcast in those markets so they are probably getting a lof of viewers in those international markets. Big deal for advertisers in those areas basically creates Super Bowl caliber ad opportunities.

So yeah I'm firmly in the camp they wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't making money, it might even create new endorsement opportunities for players akin to what we're seeing in China with NBA ballers.

I think there's at least some nuance here. The players may have some complexity in tax reporting but maybe not that much more net tax depending on foreign tax credits and state taxes. But it's not really accurate to say they're just outright double taxed with no offset.

These games may or may not be at a net cost to the owners, but the league is also using them to grow revenue globally, which ultimately feeds the same salary cap system players benefit from.

And yeah, the players get an overseas trip on someone else's dime.

If you look closely at the crowds at those games, they're dotted with colors of virtually every NFL team, no matter which two are playing. The merchandise sales bump alone possibly covers any net game costs.

BleedinRed

The players have zero tax issues from playing over seas.  None.  Nada. Zip.

vegashog

the league gives teams a stipend to cover any extra cost, and the revenue made goes into a pot that all teams get an equal cut from (nfl says the average per game revenue is close to $50 million). while there probably will never be any real growth in american football overseas, the people in those countries love watching it and show up for the games. there's even an international version of game pass. there's no money being lost.

The U.S. audience continues to grow as seen in the size of the TV contracts hence the increasing salary cap, which is rooted completely in the tv revenue.  That is what is divided up equally to the 32 teams.  Everything else belongs to the team, hence why Jerry has a team worth about 15 billion.

Mr Goodell believes at some point there will be a group of teams in Europe, which the league would likely charge 5 billion apiece for.  Who wants to be drafted to be an expat?  Where will the QBs come from? They don't have 32 decent ones now.

Roger is going to kill the golden goose.  His stupid expansion of games exclusive to various streaming platforms is catching hell and he's about to announce a five game package to Netflix.  The sale of nfl media to espn should not have been approved.

I'd love to see Goodell in dc defending his media decisions and why they are in line with the exemption. They've gotten a pass for years because the product was available free on network TV.  Now you need the networks, espn, nfl network, peacock, prime, and netflix.
