RIP - Bobby F'ing Knight

Someone has already said it-- Bobby Knight died today.  He was controversial at times, but brilliant as a coach, at least in my opinion. 

I saw something on Twitter earlier that showed a video clip of him saying Michael Jordan was the best basketball player he had ever seen-- before he went pro.  I have read a lot about Knight, but never heard that before.

As the other poster said, I would have been proud for my son to play for him.  But I would have also been scared to death.

True story, I coached a travel baseball team that SonofSpam's grandson played on. I gave a pregame speech that was Bobby Knight-esque. We won 17-3. Those boys learned some new words that day (and responded with their play). That was either 12 or 13 yo ball.

Point of clarity on my pregame speech, I didn't use the Lord's name in vain. Everything else was allegedly included.

I have a good friend who lives in Lubbock.  He played basketball for TCU in college, so he was well acquainted with Knight when Knight moved to Lubbock and coached for a few years.  Got to know him well. 

My friend loves to hunt and fish, and of course Knight was famous for fishing.  My friend found out Knight wanted to go turkey hunting, so he took Knight.  Lectured him on sitting still, being quiet, etc. Sure enough, a turkey came along and something spooked it maybe Knight.  My friend jumped up and ran over to knight screaming at him about keeping still and being a dumbass, etc.  He told me he couldn't keep it up for more than about 5 seconds before he started laughing.  Knight immediately caught on, and took it very well.  He really liked Knight.

I had forgotten Wally's deal with Knight. I now remember how he wrote some articles about it and would refer to him as the coach whose name he would not type. I know that Knight never gave a rat's ass that Wally wouldn't type his name and it made Wally look like a bitch 8th grader.
