Pinion (and Ford for that matter) are players that needed to mature into the players they are today.  Mussleman and even Cals system does not accommodate growth.  They are looking for immediate impact players that are one and done.

The big schools have farmed out the player development function to the mid-majors and other have nots.

For a program like ours to end up with a junior or senior contributor it has to be someone like Wagner who was highly touted but hasn't lived up to expectations, and who also has the character and/or loyalty to either coach or program to stick around rather than taking someone else's offer.

It's as much on the player's as it is the cosch. Possibly more. Most of these kids don't want to stay and develop. They want to transfer somewhere they think they have a better shot at playing.

I think Cal is trying hsve more development type players. See Sealy and Semedo for example. I think he sees the benefit returning players provide.

if you're a player in the 60-70th range, you're not contributing at a p4 level for a while, if at all. the players have to be realistic about it too.

instead of sitting on the bench and getting afterthought coaching for a couple of years only to transfer out, go to a decent mid major program. there's a lot of good coaches at those schools where you can get your game developed and if you got it, the major schools will notice you.

100% what I would do. You probably risk/lose a little bit of NIL by going mid major, but if you play well there you will make up for it when you transfer up.

That's a pretty tall ask...expecting teenagers (many of which have grifter adults with their hands out influencing them) to choose future potential over instant gratification.  But you're absolutely right.

This is why I am worried about our ceiling even if our guys start playing together and everything gels.  We simply STILL don't have "the mens" Larry Johnson advised us to get so many years ago.
Arizona beat UConn 71-67 last night.  Here are some excerpts from the summary article, relevant to paint play. I don't see us matching up well in the tournament against either of these teams.

UConn announced that starting senior center Tarris Reed Jr. was out with a sprained ankle. Reed is one of the nation's best big men who is averaging 20.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Without Reed, UConn struggled to slow down Arizona, with the Wildcats putting forth one of the most dominant paint displays against the Huskies under Dan Hurley en route to a 71-67 road win.

"With Reed out of the game, we're not going to say it doesn't change things. We know it changes things," Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said. "But if you get a good hop, field it and turn two. And our guys found a way to do that."

It was clear what Arizona intended to do against a Reed-less UConn frontcourt. Koa Peat had an early layup. Motiejus Krivas was getting consistent paint touches and set a career high with 10 rebounds before the first half even ended. Jaden Bradley was constantly attacking the rim and drawing fouls.

"That's how we're built," Lloyd said. "If you're not up for the physical fight, it's going to be tough. It's going to be tough to be a team that wins consistently at a high level. It's going to be tough to win on the road. It's going to be tough to win in the NCAA tournament. It's going to be tough to make a deep run. We want to build our team with guys that are capable of playing physical basketball."

The Huskies won back-to-back national championships partially on the strength of their frontcourt dominance, overwhelming teams in the paint at both ends of the floor.

I watched that game. Both teams had much bigger bigs than we do. AZ would fucking destroy us in the paint.

It would take a 3 point shooting night a couple of levels above standard deviation. Can't count on those more than once in the six games of the tournament.

Also watched some of Bama-Illinois last night. Bama won and is going to be tough as always. For Illinois, the brother we didn't have grew a beard to tell them apart. The brother we did have, Z, started and went 16 minutes and 3 points (1/4 from 3) in the loss.  Sounds about right.

In the part I watched, Andrej Stojakovic of Illinois was awesome.  Kid is going to be a STAR and rich rich. Son of longtime NBA great Peja Stojakovic.  Stojakovic the younger has his own handle and can finish in the paint against big guys.

I asked if we had any "bigs" at the beginning of the year. I have watched some teams with bigs, that would kill us inside. We need some wide bodies. Bama beat somebody last night and will probably beat us.
