You're the one who brought "person" into the conversation.  I wasn't sure why and it confused me.  Runt off is runt off.

Regardless, I took Bush's comments as a slight to Saban and it seemed ridiculous.  We can move on now.

We're moving on from anything

The comments Bush made are probably 💯 correct but I think it should be taken into context that Saban isn't a coach with a decade left in the tank enough for him to reinvent himself something he's shown he can do. This is a man that like many near retirement said fuck this I'm out and nobody can really blame him. I won't be shocked if he ends up in some role in the NFL as a front office guy but at his age why would he?

This NIL and portal business has created a lot of havoc, has little or no guard rails and a utter recipe for player tampering.

Absolutely Saban is butt hurt he can't sit on his ivory tower and rule over the college football universe. This new free for all has created a system many have desired but to get here it feels wrong somehow. Maybe it's the part where tiny Arkansuk still sucks.

Saban is in his 70's, has more national titles than any coach in history and has done it at multiple programs. He just won the SEC for the 11th time beating a Georgia team that hadn't lost a game in 3 years. He's past retirement age and has nothing left to prove. Reggie Bush has no idea why Saban retired, but there's a really good chance it was just time to move on with the next phase of life with his wife.

Bad look for Bush in my opinion.

Bad look for Bush, but he isn't wrong.

Has Saban come out and said this is why he's leaving and I missed it?

I posted that same thing a week ago.

Happy to help.

No, but he also didn't come out and tell us if he's taken a shit in the last week either.

If he'd won the National Championship this year, would you still believe he was leaving because of the current system?

You understand you're arguing Bush's point right?  He left because he didn't win, he didn't win because the system introduces more parity and levels the playing field, so to speak.

Both can be, and imo are true.  Greatest college coach ever, who got tired of the grind, got old, and doesn't have the drive for this new game.

And that's okay.  Go spend your money, Coach

Saban quit because he had nothing to prove, was old, tired, and didn't want to deal with college athletes in the NIL era. They want to be treated like college kids but payed like pros.
Who would want to deal with that?
Oak Grove in the house.

I'm not arguing his point at all. My point is that Bush has no idea why Saban is retiring despite claiming he does. I don't know why he is retiring either. I'm simply saying it's possible that he's accomplished enough and is just ready to move on with life. There isn't always something that pushes you out.

I'm not seeing all this evidence that Saban can't do just as well with the transfer portal and NIL. His recruiting hasn't faded. His classes are still #1 or #2 every year including last year. His program produced the first 7 figure NIL deal. His best receiver this year was a transfer from an in conference rival that just won the National Championship, so he seemed to be figuring out NIL and the portal just fine.

Bama hasn't won 7 of the last 10 National Titles, while 5 other schools have won titles. It's not like his results have all of a sudden plummeted.

Covered in the "Other College Football" thread.

Tubberville said he talks to Nick Saban often, and the NIL situation was the main driver of his retirement.  It used to be you could have "discipline and rules" but now the athletes are in control.  All of their money has just made that explicit.

Thanks for posting. Glad to know Saban actually did say this.

Why pay your dues for two years waiting for your real shot when you can get paid and play right now?

The problem with this is kids can't see the benefits of waiting for their shot.  How many NFL draft picks waited a couple of years under Saban's system?  If they had gone somewhere else where they could play now under a different coach, would they have developed into the player they became?  I think some would have and some wouldn't.  There are multiple reasons he had so many players drafted into the NFL.  Some of that has to be his coaching.

For those that are retiring, congratulations. For those saying what to do next, I could chase enough golf balls in the woods and catch enough fish to keep me content.

Y'all enjoy retirement! 👍

if it was all about the NIL then why are the Bama dudes in the portal?

you want your $10k nil now or did you want to play for Saban who would prepare for the NFL where the bag is much bigger?

the market is going to correct itself at some point, just how long will it take?

college has always been coach driven. now that Nick is gone, replace him with Kirby and the question remains.

I think it's just the opposite, Goose.  Why should I take X amount from Bama and never play?  I can get a little more from some other school, and play on Saturdays.

I think that is the attitude these days.

By the way, I fully agree that the market will correct itself.

shouldn't the $$$ becoming from the TV contracts and not the fanbase?

it's why college sports is in the pickle it's in, the athletic departments don't want to share their tv money and yet spend yours and mine - tickets, foundation and now the collective.

the conferences started all this when the got schools to give them their media rights, maybe the conferences should create the pay standard - SEC and Big 10 pay the most because they are the most valuable but there's got to be a cap right? or maybe not since aTm is gonna out spend everyone and still go 8-4.
