Looks like it's probably true.  That probably explains the suddenness of it without even a farewell tour year.  That's a terrible thing for anyone and everyone and I am very sorry to hear it.

Quote from: mr.zorak on Jan 11, 2024, 06:54 AMBesides the field being leveled by NIL, etc. and his inability to now purchase/procure all the 5 star talent and keep it like he used to,   I wonder if any of this is related to possibly his or his wife's health?

But I am sure the HIPAA is strong in Bammer Land...

I don't believe the field is leveled at all by NIL, wont be until there's a cap like in the NFL.

Quote from: BleedinRed on Jan 11, 2024, 08:08 AMA poster on TD wrote that she has been diagnosed with Alzheimer.  Probably bullshit but you never know.  What we do know is coaches of his age who leave the game don't tend to be in good shape after a few years.  Hope retirement is good to him.

He didn't look nearly as intense this year for some reason.  Sure there were moments, but this is a guy who threw a fit with eyes bulging out of his head over a fumble being called down in the 4th quarter of a 52-0 blowout in 2012.  Being preoccupied with taking care of his wife is definitely something that could explain him being more distant and/or having his priorities elsewhere.

In spite of the fact we couldn't beat him, I admire the hell out of Saban for what he accomplished. Like you I wish him and his family well, and hope they get to enjoy some of the fruits of their hard work.
Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

If the rumors are true, Nick's next job (the most important one he has ever held) will be protecting Ms. Terry and allowing her to live out her remaining years with dignity and grace.

I suspect he will be much better at this job than Dr. Jill is at hers.

This is why my wife and are are retiring at 60.  We don't want to work into our 70s and then have little quality of life left.  We want to travel, etc. while we are healthy.

Having been through it, I wouldn't wish that shit on anybody.  It is so hard on everyone.

The NFL has no cap on what players can make from endorsements.

this. and if (when) the day comes that players are paid under contract, nil will still be there.

there is nothing wrong with nil. what has happened under the guise of nil is a different matter.

Quote from: TC on Jan 10, 2024, 10:11 PMI can't tell you what the rest of the league did or didnt do regarding the allegations.  I also cant tell you whether the allegations wouldve satisfied the burden of proof required by a court of law, or the Commissioner, to prove them guilty. I can tell you that over the last 20 years TV contract money has gone ape shit, and it no doubt benefitted the entire SEC, including the SEC Commissioners office, to not levy sanctions against Bama.

So yes, counselor, the best I can give you is a shit load of allegations that span at least a decade or more, of Alabama cheating by paying players either with cash, improper benefits, etc., or all the above.

Is this really new news, or am I on this island alone?
They've cheated going back to Bears time. They had a lot of swimmers on scholarship that would splash all of the water out of the pool if they dived in all at once.

There's some entertaining reading about Shug Jordan and the Bears intrigue and backstabbing on stealing players from each other. Bryant is from S Arkansas and learned early if you ain't cheating you ain't trying.

I waited until I was 62, but definitely our thought process as well.

Once again...remember Albert Means? They were caught red handed and nothing was done.
Well, shit...

Just did it. Retirement means waking up with nothing to do and only getting it half done. I didn't realize just how much yard work there is around here.

Congrats!

It will be my turn next month.

I wish nothing but the best for Nick and Ms. Terry in whatever the rest of their lives may hold.  If the health rumors are true, then my prayers are with that whole family.

Nick was good at LSU but his dynasty at Alabama was nothing short of amazing.  So much of the SEC's elite status is due to what he accomplished and what his assistants went on to achieve.  Sure it was at a division rival but I'm still glad that I got to witness a level of greatness that college sports may never see again.  Belichick at least had Brady, Saban had to keep doing again and again with different rosters.

More first round picks (49) than losses (29) at Alabama

Every recruiting class at Alabama won at least one National Championship

10+ wins in 16 consecutive seasons

Ranked #1 at some point in the season for 15 consecutive years

10 #1 ranked recruiting classes

7 National Championships in total

206-29 at Alabama.  20.6% of those losses were in the first year.  120-18 against the SEC while at Alabama.

Before Saban, Alabama had 6 national award winners.  Since 2008, the Saban era has produced 60 national award winners.

Alabama had zero Heisman winners before Saban, now they have 4.  That's tied for the most Heismans won under a single coach (Frank Leahy @ ND).

Also, Saban is the only one to have coached Heisman winners at 3 different positions - RB (2), WR (1), and QB (1).

I retired at 62 in 2013. Me and the wife (who is a lot younger than I am) travel a lot. She will be retiring in a little over 3 years. Can't wait for us to just sleep in, travel some more, and just hang out.
Well, shit...

Congrats!  Six months in and I'm still finding my daily routines.  My wife loves yardwork, and I hate it, so we've got that going for us.

It's good to see there's no illnesses that took him away.  I think it's honorable to get out when you don't think you can give it 100% anymore.

I saw that and to me, that is pure Saban.  "Didn't think I could do the job the way I wanted to do it, so I quit."  I wish everyone had that much integrity.

egregious

didn't realize so many of us pulled the pin at 62.

My Dad and his two older brothers all died at 65, no way I was working that long.

This retirement is damn great.  If anybody is looking for something to do I like helping adults getting ready for their GED is light and it feels good when 1 passes (the test!, I have to be careful when talking about people passing at this age).  There is frustration because they have some attendance issues.

Almost everywhere has a Literacy Council.

The financial key is to get inflows to match your monthly expenses, then anything you have to invest is gravy.
