I agree Cal will be motivated. Kids making a decent chunk of money but aren't overly obligated to give any fucks is going to be a variable every school will contend with from now on. So it'll be like a box of chocolates.

 

Coaches have led the way for several decades on bailing on schools and players for the better gig. No one is loyal except the fans, and even they burn jerseys. I've always said it should be the same way for players. Whether you allow it, or dont, the rules should be the same or similar for coaches and players.

I do understand that coaches have multi-year deals with buyouts, and the NIL is a 1-year contract without a buyout, so it's not exactly the same. I am a fan however of players having more mobility just like coaches have always had.

Two very intriguing 4's hit the portal today. Coleman Hawkins from IL and Toppin from NM. Hawkins will be highly sought after. Toppin would be a sophomore.

It's all about motivation. How do you get players, who make tens of millions every year, to even want to extend their season by making the playoffs? The ring. It's the one thing they can't buy.

College is different. Most of Cal's players have been one and done. Motivation to do what's necessary to win games just doesn't mean as much, if anything at all. Perhaps that's how lesser teams, on paper, do so well in the tournament these days.
