Here's how I thought it worked: The chicken man gives $6 million for Cal to build his roster with. Cal spends $1 million on Big Z, leaving Cal $5 million to play with.

Here's how I was told it worked: The chicken man puts $6 million in the NIL pot. Big Z's agent negotiates the best deal he can with whoever controls the NIL pot, let's say $2 million in this case, leaving Cal only $4 million to play with.

Anybody know how it really works?

Foreign athletes are here on a F1 student visa that prohibits off campus work. They are thus not able to participate in any active NIL work. They could earn passive NIL income through an EA sports type of deal. 

Unless he has one helluva passive deal (likely cheating). Big Z isn't getting NIL money.

they can play outside of the us and get as much as they can while they're there.

tshiebwe got at least half a mil for the week kentucky was in the bahamas a couple of seasons ago. cal got them in that tourney specifically so that could happen.

We did something similar for Fall in the Bahamas.

Not real sure but I think we mighta got fucked on that deal.

That's good info on the foreign players.

But what about the U.S. players? Can Cal direct how much of the chicken man's $6 million goes to whom or is he at the mercy of the players' agents and the gatekeepers of the NIL fund?

Seems like you need a good salary cap guru to have a decent college team these days. I'm interested in who has the final say-so on how the chicken man's money gets divvied up.

Cal has the advantage of his reputation for preparing guys for the NBA. That has tangible long term financial benefit.

It's not all about NIL, but we should be able to compete.

I'm gonna guess Cal would be in charge of making those decisions. He may tell Tyson that Ballo isn't worth $1.2MM of the budget if he can get two other guys he really wants for $600K each. Hard to see the money folks, especially Tyson, choosing his players for him.
