I've been letting grok dig around for me on big tornado outbreaks and El Niño/La Niña cycles control the jet  stream. La Niña-neutral is the big producer of bad weather in the US... which is what we've been in this year. It called for big outbreaks in Ohio River Valley and Dixie Alley which is what has happened so far. Very grim hurricane outlook, mainly for the north and east gulf.

I prefer the north end up around Duck/Corolla. A week or two after Labor Day is the sweet spot since most of the tourist traffic is gone and the shops and restaurants haven't yet closed for the season. Beach is decent but the Atlantic is nowhere as pretty as the Gulf waters.

If you do nothing else go to 1718 Brewing on Okracoke and get the crab stuffed soft pretzel. I don't even like crab but it's one of the finest foods I've ever tasted.

The Wright Brothers thing is pretty cool too.
