Quote from: DirkPiggler on Mar 02, 2026, 10:54 AMThe margin was shocking, but the fact that we lost handily to Florida shouldn't have surprised anyone who had seen Pringle, Ewin, and to a lesser extent Brazile play.  This was always going to be a bad matchup for us.

We are a solid inside threat - offensively and defensively - from being a title contender.  Our only hope of advancing past the Sweet Sixteen is to avoid the teams who have more than one competent big guy who can play at the same time.  On the plus side there are only a handful of those at most.  But it would take divine intervention to allow us to avoid all of them, which is our only slim hope of taking home hardware.
I want no part of Florida again, but there's a fair chance we see them in the conference tourney.  Not sure if that's good or bad.

Exactly. There was a reason Florida was an 11 point favorite.

We don't matchup with anyone that has decent inside play.

If we happen to play a #1 seed in the Sweet 16 (assuming we're a 4 or 5 seed), it will be a terrible match up for us. We don't matchup well with the projected #1 seeds:

Michigan
Arizona
Duke
UConn

We can still beat anyone as long as one or two of our bigs have a game.  Unfortunately there is no rhyme or reason to when they play well.  We probably can't ever win two in a row against teams like that.

In the Florida game we had about a dozen shots in the first half that usually go in just not go in. I assume that's because their bigs weren't concerned with our bigs offensively and were able to focus on disrupting our guards.  Or it just wasn't our night.

It'll be interesting to see how Acuff responds.  Those overrated chants were brutal.

i whole heartedly agree that if we are clicking on all cylinders we can beat anybody.  this team clicking is going to score 100+ on anyone they play.

This is where we find out if Acuff has that 'dog' in him.

I don't want to make this post, but the facts are we stand at 1-7 this year against quad-1A teams.

Our team this year is capped at around 20th for good reason.  We can make the sweet 16 again, but past that we're going to have big problems.

We have 3 great guards and a couple finesse bigs who either get 20 or 0.  Nobody else deserves a mention.

It's sad to waste a generational talent like Acuff with bad roster construction.  We've literally ridden him into the ground.

Love Cal, but there's a noticeable frontcourt talent difference in our team and the top teams in college basketball this year.

Somto Cyril was signed with Cal at Kentucky, but went to Georgia.  He would be huge for this team.

I think Cal hoped Erwin/TB/Pringle would develop to be the interior, but they are just too soft.

There was a "what the frick happened?" post making the rounds on Twitter that had a highlight reel of Pringle at Bama.

What the frick happened?  Entirely different player.

I keep hoping he's going to turn it on in the tournament. He's proved he can, just not here.

Who knew we'd be longing for the days of Jonas Aidoo.

100% and much better said than what I tried to say a few days ago.  There is simply nothing anyone can point to that shows that we can beat everyone on any given night.  We could play Florida 100 times and we would lose 100 times.  We are a sweet 16 team.  But depending on where we are seeded we would need someone to upset the #1 or #2 seed to have a prayer of advanceing to the Elite 8.

I have the sweet 16 as the pinnacle for them this year.

Reason:

We're not good on defense.  Florida got all up in our guts at
will.

In the tournament, especially early for some reason, you will have a game where you struggle shooting the ball.  So you have to have great defense to keep you in the game.  Even Nolan's best teams had wtf offensive outings.  What won the game?  Grit on defense.  See Princeton, and I believe it was North Texas we eeked out in 94.

If our offense struggles we could very well go home.

As others have said, the only reason we went to the sweet 16 last year was Aidoo.  Pringle will never be Aidoo, Aidoo was All-SEC at TN.  Ewin is the hope, and that Brazile gets out of his later season slump shooting the ball.

All the hype is around Acuff, and it should be, but this team will only go as far as Brazile's production.

And, this has me looking at next year.  Same thing.  We have 3 elite prospects coming in at guard.  They are all freshmen though, and none of them are Acuff.  We won't see another Acuff, likely ever.

Wagner needs to go, bad investment.  Knox will almost certainly go too for the same reason.  I wouldn't even want to know what we paid those guys to come back and do nothing.  You can't afford that now.

As for bigs, we struck out in HS again.  But we have to get better at the forward/center position if we ever want to compete for championships again.

It can be done, we just had 3 guys this year command a lot of money for very terrible results.

We are going to need Wagner because some will have to bring the ball up when JSJ is off the court.

JJ isn't a guard.  He's more of a wing who due to his size will be able to play small ball four.  Probably a better version of Knox.  Toure can probably play the 2 or 3.

Word on the skreet is that Cal knows he's got to pony up for a competent big this offseason out of the portal.  Hopefully he chooses wisely this time.
Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

We remained #20 in the AP poll despite Saturday night.

Seems like the voters said, "eh, seems about right."

We started at #20 in the Pomeroy rankings before the Friday night games, and moved up as high as #14 as of game time Saturday night.

We're now back at #20.

He hit a 3 to beat LSU in OT. They used Dillard as a decoy and he drained about a 25 footer for the win.

Popped up in the X feed by warmachine today. Glorious.

lunardi has us a 5th seed, same side of the bracket as texas tech. uconn in the other bracket.

Pig Benis

I don't think we win more than 2 games in the tournament but if we have to play a 1 seed then UConn is the one we want. That total would be 190.
