It's readily apparent that the DVH and Hobbs don't have any confidence in Beidelschies. I doubt we see him in a big spot going forward unless there's no other option.

I think they're less bullish on Jiminez in a starting role right now since his last 2 outings were shaky. He seems to do better out of the pen.

I think their mentality is that you let Root go back out there and prove himself, and you have Jiminez available for mid to long relief if needed.

The only real question about the rotation is who starts tomorrow nights game (assuming we win tonight).  I don't know who you start other than a Jiminez or BJ.

We all know Root is very good when he is "on" and not very good when he isn't.  He will be on a short leash tonight for sure.  If is on, and we get 4 or 5 innings from him, and can use him again late in the weekend, this will look like a good move.

There's a few steps twixt here and there. If we get to "late in the weekend," that means our C team will have beaten LSU. Which is the main part of this gamble, not whether Root is on tonight.

McEntire hasn't gotten a ton of work, but he's done it before in Omaha and that park plays large (which reduces the susceptibility to the long ball).

Like everyone else don't love it. Surely it would be easier to beat UCLA with a patchwork game rather than LSU. I see that bringing Root back for Game 2 or 3 would work better if he pitches today, but that is definitely a chickens before they hatch situation.

Yes, but so is acting like UCLA is a midweek game while looking forward to LSU again. Gotta win this one first and he's the best pitcher available. It certainly isn't ideal. If we were going to save pitchers and look ahead then yesterday was the day for that.

During the season:

Game one: loss 5-4 - Root/Jimenez/Gaeckle
Of course Gaeckle gave up the game winniner in the 10th but Jimenez lost that game in the 7th by giving up two runs. We were up 4-2 at that point.

Game two: loss 13-3 - Wood/Bybee/Fisher/McGuire/Eaves/Dietz
They beat the shit out of us and I think we woud all prefer Wood start against them now.

Game three: win 7-4 - Beidelschies/Carter/Foutch/Gibler/Jimenez/Coil
Beidelschies gave up 3 runs in the first three innings.  Everyone else locked it down after that.  Well, except Jimenez.  He gave up another run in the 8th.  

Other than Gaeckle; none of our starting pitchers or Jimenez were good against LSU. Fuck, start Foutch or Carter tomorrow night and see how it goes.

UCLA hasn't seen Root.  LSU has seen him twice.  As mentioned above, you throw your best pitcher tonight regardless.  Must win.

ETA: What it really tells me is DVH's lack of confidence in our offense (not without good reason). Theoretically, we should be able to outscore UCLA tonight. Given how many arms they used today and so far in the tournament. We shouldn't need Root to outscore them. Using Root means DVH thinks we actually cannot outscore them and we need the pitching.

It's likely also the primary reason for the quick hook on Root the last game.

After giving up that many early, it was always going to be a big hurdle to come back against Anderson, so no reason to waste a starter arm.
