Add me to the "Why Root?" list, but maybe he can give us 5-6 good innings against UCLA and let us keep saving arms for two games against LSU.  Maybe DVH feels like he needs to get some mojo back after being pulled early in his last outing.

I doubt we could beat LSU twice with bullpen games (would love to be wrong). Starting Root is not smart IMO.

Like everyone else don't love it. Surely it would be easier to beat UCLA with a patchwork game rather than LSU. I see that bringing Root back for Game 2 or 3 would work better if he pitches today, but that is definitely a chickens before they hatch situation.

someone explained to me, its a platoon game.  root on a pitch count, see how he does, pull him after 3-4 innings or 50 pitches if he's doing ok.  then carter, coil, mcentire, or whomever. 

this way if we make it to the championship series we can start gaeckle, wood, root.  although that order can change i just made it up based on last day pitched.

It might be a gut check situation to see if his head is screwed back on straight or if he's a mess from his implosion.

That would be the absolute worst thing he could do. If Root is on you pitch him as far as he can go. We need all of those bullpen arms to try to beat LSU twice.

If we burn Root and half of the bullpen tonight we may as well pack it up and come home.

Starting Root is the right move.  You have to win.  Plus, your hope is that we don't need him to go more than 4 innings.  Where it gets dicey is he pitches a great game and the score is 0-0 when the 5th starts.  Our bats will either win or lose Omaha for us.  It won't be pitching.

Without having done much thinking on days rest and pitch count; here is how I see it...

If we get to Wednesday, we can throw Jiminez or Beetlejuice.  No way would I throw Root back out there against LSU.  Win Wednesday and on Thursday you now have Geickle for the deciding game to go to the Championship Series.

In the Championship series you start Wood in game one and then have Root avaiblabe to start Game two on Sunday.  If it goes to Game three you have Gaeckle again.

I don't think you throw Root against LSU tonight or on Wednesday.  Personnaly, I think they have his number from what they did in the season and first game of Omaha. 

And for the record, I think DVH was pitching Root tonight regardless of opponenent.  While I might disagree, there is a reason I'm not a coach.

ETA: What it really tells me is DVH's lack of confidence in our offense (not without good reason). Theoretically, we should be able to outscore UCLA tonight. Given how many arms they used today and so far in the tournament. We shouldn't need Root to outscore them. Using Root means DVH thinks we actually cannot outscore them and we need the pitching.

It's readily apparent that the DVH and Hobbs don't have any confidence in Beidelschies. I doubt we see him in a big spot going forward unless there's no other option.

I think they're less bullish on Jiminez in a starting role right now since his last 2 outings were shaky. He seems to do better out of the pen.

I think their mentality is that you let Root go back out there and prove himself, and you have Jiminez available for mid to long relief if needed.

Fixed that for you.  In his last 5 outings, he has pitched 8.2 innings, thrown 179 pitches, given up 17 hits, 8 walks and 10 earned runs.  He scares me right now.

I think that is a fair and reasonable view.  I think Dave knows we MUST win tonight to keep playing so he is going to throw his best arm.  He basically said that in an interview last night or earlier today.  Can't remember which now.  

IMO, If our season comes down to picking knits over the starting pitcher then we were not built to win Omaha.
