Quote from: BleedinRed on Jun 20, 2025, 09:13 AMFuck the Ole Miss' of the world.  I would rather be in the hunt every year.  Arkansas is legitimatly one dropped foul ball from a national championship and one terrible aweful not so good 9th inning from playing in a deciding game to go to the national championship.  We are going to win one before Dave retires.  Once we win the first one, we might damn well win a few more.
Agree with all of this.

And fuck Ole Miss.

I will never, and I mean NEVER, place Ole Miss as the same caliber program as Arkansas.  I don't care. They hired douchebags for coaches, that have behavioral issues nobody wants, that win some games in the short term.  Good for them.  For now.  They will recede back to their usual position, as our little stepbrother that mom had with a drug dealer.

They have never been our equal.  Never will be.  They try so hard with their "literature" and their chicken salad and bowties to mask that fact. But they know it too.

Fuck Ole Miss.

I think you guys are missing the point about the Ole Miss comparison.

The point is precisely that they're not on our level in college baseball.

The question is whether you'd trade consistent excellence for inconsistency and a title.

I would rather be us.

I think I got the point.  I would rather be us too.

I would like to see us win the conference regular season and SEC tournament a little more though.

I'm trying to think of a basketball program that has been super fucking good year in and year out but never won, I guess Gonzaga would be the best one to pick.

To be a fair comparison, our basketball team would have to erase the last maybe 6 years or so.

Let's pretend that the last 6-7 years never happened and we just continued like they never did and we just continued on like before.

Would you trade Gonzaga, which goes to the tourney every year, makes deep runs every year but has NEVER won a championship for our program that has won a championship and has our history.  I'm talking about someone that is, say, my age (50) and lived through 94/95.

Would you trade with them?

I would not.  I wouldn't even have to think about it.  Not even for a second.  The memories of that title run will remain with me forever.  I don't care how many deep tourney runs or elite 8's or even final 4's you make, they just aren't the fucking same.  Hell, even 95, which was the finals, is just a "meh".  NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, replaces the feeling of winning it all.  NOTHING.  You know it, I know it.

If Shaddy catches that fucking foul ball, every fucking one of you would remember how you felt and cherish that memory and recall that for the rest of your lives.  Talk about it and recall it forever.  No matter how our program did or ebbed or flowed, that would be something you held onto and could never be taken away from you.  NEVER.

I remember the night of our championship in 94 like it was yesterday and that was 30 years ago and I know that each and every one of you do too.  A baseball championship would be the same and you know it too.

If you say that you would prefer to just win a ton of games and be a good program year in and year out vs trading for one guaranteed championship you are fucking lying to yourself.  You know it and I know it.

Hell, guaranteed championship and then GUARANTEED mediocre 10 years and I'll take that deal in an instant.  IN AN instant and each of you would too.

I lean towards agreeing, but it's not that simple.

I like the fact that I care about Arkansas baseball, and that I have expectations of competing and hopes of winning a championship.  It's nice to be one of the 4-5 teams that everyone falls back on as a preseason Omaha favorite just based on reputation.

If you're handing me a crystal ball and saying we can win the CWS next year but 2027-2048 or so are guaranteed to be somewhere between mediocre and unwatchable with zero hope of anything better, then no I'm not going to take the deal. I can adjust expectations and enjoy winning SEC titles and Super Regionals and be happy.

If the offer is a championship next year but an uncertain future going forward (like maybe DVH retiring and handing the reins to Hobbs who may or may not succeed), then yes give me the title.

Most of us who were around for the 1990-1995 run thought it was going to last forever.  If you had told any of us that starting two short years later we wouldn't get out of the first weekend of the tournament for 25 years no one would have believed it.

I would take 1 guaranteed championship and then almost anything for 10 years as the payment for that.  2018 will be 10 years soon enough.

Time goes by fast when you aren't winning anything lasting, even CWS trips, but the memory of an ACTUAL championship really doesn't fade with time.

I don't think that is what anyone is saying.

If the option is to never win a championship but win a lot of games OR win a championship and never do it again while being mediocre...

I'll take the championship.

But that isn't what we have right now.  We have a team that wins a lot of games AND will win a championship at some point.

Thanks for saying it better than I could.

We're not guaranteed to never win one by doing the same things.  It's not like we're running the baseball equivalent of the Nutt circus out there and hoping for a different result.  It's just damned hard to win a title, even if you're really good.  Doubly so when you're facing the opponents on the field and the curse.

A razorback football loss used to put me in a terrible mood for five days. It's not worth being that emotionally invested in Arkansas athletics anymore.

I'm not going to write a dissertation, but I would be us. I remember 94 like it was yesterday and when it was over I was crying, tears of joy and pure happiness. I called my aunt's husband, HUGE BB fan and he was crying. I would have done the same in 95, I would have done the same if Shaddy had caught the foul ball. I'm emotionally invested and I'm damn glad we're consistently good. That gives us a legitimate chance to get one.

Fuck being Ole Miss or Gonzaga.
I need help and I know it.

This is your best post ever.

I was just talking about the drought from 1996 to Muss the other day.

I was a student ticket holder in 93-94.  It was unfathomable to think back then that we wouldn't be the next Duke.  Hell, I would've told you we were starting a dynasty better than Duke.

Many such cases.  UNLV.  Georgetown.  Even Indiana.  Their last title was 1986.  Syracuse is done now.

National championships are quite the unicorn.  I get it.

Thank you.  We were in the student ticket line at the same time.   It seemed like we would be there forever.

And who could blame us?   People our age first got exposed to Razorback basketball with the 1978 Final Four team.  We were really good...ranging from nationally relevant to the best...for all of our formative years.

It gets to a larger point.  Dynasties are more a function of the coach than the program.   Hire a great one and you win.   Get a mediocre one and you can win occasionally but results will be erratic.  Hire a moron and you're going to suck no matter what advantages you might have.

100%. I'd take 8-10 years of suck to win a championship. However, I would not take 25 straight years of praying to just make the tournament again. I'd rather be excellent every year knowing we have a legitimate chance at the title and enjoying the good times that come with the bad.

I became apathetic to the football program years ago. Once that sets in I'm not sure what it takes to get me back. I will never take DVH nor the baseball program for granted in the midst of the run we're in, championship or not.
The Lord wants you to put your foot on their balls and believe in it. 'Cuz that's what wins football games. Not jumping offsides like a bunch of wimps and faggots. I don't care what those pinkos over in Russia say. You want to be a loser? You go live in Russia. I'm a winner. I'm an American.

Seems maybe there is a happy medium of maybe 10ish years of GUARANTEED suck for a GUARANTEED championship, vs nothing guaranteed, good or bad.  I mean, we could continue to be good and we COULD win one or we could continue to be good and not win one or we could start to slide off and not be as good and not win one ever...

For me, I would take the Guaranteed championship and Guaranteed suck in an instant.  I just would.  The feeling of a championship is something that can't be tarnished, even with years of suck while years and years of being good and "almost" getting there can never, EVER, replicate the feeling of a championship.  You can try to tell yourself it can, but it just can't.

10 years would be the limit I guess.  20 is way too long so if the 94 championship cost us the 20 years after that, MAYBE it wasn't worth it.  Nah, hell, it was still fucking worth it.  You can never take that 94 from me and I'll go to my grave with those memories as some of the happiest moments of my life.  Bar none, happiest moments of my life right up there in the pantheon of my child being born.  Not quite, but up there.

What if, under Petrino, the "deal" was we won a Championship and then everything played out just as it did, now our time up and we are back on the clock, free to make another deal.  If the 2011 team was sporting a crystal trophy, would it have been worth it?  For me?  Probably.  For "Damn they were good", no, but for a title, yeah, I'm making that deal.  It just hits different and creates CORE MEMORIES where just really good seasons don't.

The Whyte Boar

I think take the guarantee of winning a championship and rhe  sucking goes more for baseball than other sports.  A championship is special but baseball is pretty easy to ignore when it sucks/  So take the championship and the memories.

Arkansas baseball has sort of reached the point where national commentators are noticing the that it is snake bit and prone to choking.

My immediate thought was hell yes I would take it in 2011, especially if I knew about the subsequent conference realignment and other CFB changes. I would know we'd never sniff another championship again anyway so take the guaranteed trophy.
