He was royally pissed about the defense and called out Souza specially fucking up a DP ball and allowing more runs in the early big inning.

He also said that our 0-2 pitching approach was horrendous. I didn't realize this but they hit an 3 run HR, 2 run HR, and 2 run double, and one other big hit all on 0-2 counts.

He didn't really specify or call out any one person, just that we kept giving up big hits with 0-2 counts and 2 outs. He did give a pithy comment about "well the pitching was the pitching today."

He did call out Souza specifically, but said "the second baseman" and then went on at length about the dropped pop up and the double play ball he fucked up and how that led to things spiraling.

They scored in every inning but the 2nd. That's insane.

How do they hit so well?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Obviously it sucks to lose like that, and to lose the series after looking so good in game one, but the takeaway for me is we went toe-to-toe with the best team in the league for basically the entire weekend until the pitching shit the bed today.

We're 9-9 with four series left. Sweeping Mizzou this weekend would be ideal. Then you'd be 12-9 with three series left and two of them at home against Ole Miss and Oklahoma, neither of whom are world beaters, then finish at Kentucky who is middle of the pack.

I think a 17-13 league finish isn't out of the cards, and would keep us in the hosting conversation. Not saying we'd be a lock but I think we'd get the benefit of the doubt considering our brand and recent success.

It's also what the coaches deserve for their shit job of roster construction.

They got a wake up call after the 2023 and 2024 seasons when we had to have elite pitching and defense both years to carry terrible offenses when we were trotting out guys like Rowland, Bolton, and Diggs and ultimately got bounced in our own regional.

DVH said F this and went all in on bats after the 2024 season and pulled guys like Iredale, Davalon, Maxwell, Kozeal, and even Justin Thomas of the portal, and we ended the season with 7 out of 9 guys in our lineup hitting above .300. We're going to have to do that again.

Niu hit .276 at Marshall and never got near .300 at New Orleans, but he's going to suddenly be able to hit SEC pitching? Please. Same for Stewart who hit .269 at Missouri State. Conversely, Ruiz hit .388 at Lamar, and not surprisingly he's been the lone pickup out of the portal. The lone aberration is Pompey, who raked at Tech and has been terrible here.

Lastly, the hubris to believe that we could finally make Gaeckle a starter (despite trying and failing last year), that Fisher could suddenly morph from quasi mid-week guy to Sunday starter, and that we didn't need starters from the portal is incredible to me.

Fast forward to present day when our defense is terrible because we have too many guys playing out of position, we have no RF, our CF and 3B are bottom of the order hitters, we're getting nothing offensively from 1B, and our leadoff hitter is an unheralded freshman.
