Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Sep 21, 2025, 10:12 AMThe defense is so bad that the reports of tension on the staff make sense.  I wonder if T Will got his feelers hurt by all the attention Petrino got and how some people were instantly talking about him as a successor to Pittman.

It's the natural result when you keep a "player's coach" too long.  At some point players take advantage of the guy who is more of a buddy than a parent type.

There is room between that and the BMFP soul stealing meanness, but overall the coaches need to be closer to the asshole side than to sunshine and rainbow farts.

Agree, but a soul stealing ass chewer is what you need to follow the nice guy. That pendulum needs to swing with vengeance.

One thing that I'm laughing about on that last "run" to go along with all the other laughable things on that play is the crazy holding on our DB that actually could have come in and assisted on the tackle at the end and held him short of the first down.  The receiver holds about as bad as you could hold and no flag, yet our receiver gets wrapped up from the snap with defensive holding, then looks at the DB and gets a offensive holding call that wipes out a sure TD.

We blew the game, but holy fuck those officials were just flat out blatantly cheating.

Well, yeah I agree and have said that.  But you have one side of the ball that despite the costly miscues and mistakes is putting out effort and results.  The other side is so bad it appears to be an effort thing.  T. Will has always gotten good effort before.  What's up now?  What's different?

I think more like general incompetence at the HY level.

Quote from: jdcatty on Sep 21, 2025, 09:15 AMFrank Broyles sat 20-30 rows up in the stands and watched most practices from there.  Bear Bryant had a tower he sat on, rarely coming down.  But they both knew exactly what was going on and effort wasn't usually a problem for their teams.

JFB had five pillars that allowed him to compete against the big boys of the SWC back when there was hardly an airport in Fayetteville.  Sam violates them all. Jimmy, Hatfield, and others took them elsewhere.

1. Stamina. When the dude across from you is huffing and puffing, and you're still strong, you have them by the balls.  This team is always gassed by halftime. Same as Bert's teams.  That is a reflection of fat Sam.

2. Brains. Smart players with football smarts.  Can be coached to the nuances of the game. Most of the players planned to be coaches and played smart on the field.  Uhh our coach barely understands the basic game.

3. Speed. If you aren't growing bigger players then kill folks with speed. Play with tempo, speed out of the huddle, fast to your block, up the field, to the ball.  Always hustling.  Nope.  No sign of that.

4. Team play thru the whistle. Make your block, go get another. Pursuit to the whistle. Never stop in a play never take a play off.  11 playing as a team usually win over talent.

5. No mistakes. Fumbles, INTs, missed blocks, bad tackles, presnap penalties, dead ball fouls, were not tolerated. Individual errors were punished individually and to the team. Sam just says try to do better.  It's my fault.

I read coaching books by the greats. I see no evidence that Sam knows one thing about good coaching.  He's a worse coach than Chad or John L or Duddy Waller. :o

What seems different is what I was getting at with that post.  I think it's an accumulation of letting things slide for too long to the point that not working hard has become commonplace.

Like @mde114 said the pendulum has to swing when the coach has gone too far either way.  The 1998 team needed a guy like Nutt to build them up after Danny had beaten them down while not winning.  Our next DC probably needs to be a dick to get the players back in n the habit of working hard.

I've been saying this for a while.  The numbers don't add up.  You don't just go from one of the wealthiest departments in the country to too broke to compete with fucking Ole Miss and Missouri.  Sure we've had buyouts, but not enough to explain away the difference between opulence and poverty that we are apparently experiencing now.

It was under Petrino, but I remember at one time we were like #8 most valuable athletic departments.  That is how we funded the NEZ expansion and all the other shit.  Sure, things went to shit after he was ignorantly fired, but still, the improvements that HE funded still brought in a lot of extra revenue with those luxury boxes.

David Pryor was right.  NEZ expansion was a waste of money.   Nobody wants to sit outside staring directly into the sun even when it is cold.
It was just an excellent example of money mismanagement.  I suspect it has continued, if not accelerated.

Vickery has no unique insights there.

On tension within the staff, when one coach's wife refers to the other coaches and their wives as fucking backstabbers, things aren't going too well.

I've told you all this before but I will say it again.  Arkansas is having a power struggle in the financial area.  I have no inside info but I know Arkansas and how things worked.

The Razorback Foundation was set up by Broyles to allow us to pay coaches more than state law would allow and control fundraising.  As such, the Foundation became a powerful politically effective entity in and of itself.  With Frank gone, it had more pull than the actual AD.

Long for all his faults understood all this and was really aggressive in getting his people in at the Foundation getting it under control.  But he got arrogant and the Petrino situation eventually cost him everything when Bert failed.

HY has never seemed to be aggressive about controlling the Foundation or getting his own political influence.  So, he is basically powerless.  No matter how much money the program makes, they can't use it to hire a football coach as that state employees are limited to $300k per year.  The Foundation pays the bills.

Now, here is where money gets tight.  The Foundation plays NO ROLE in NIL.  It is in direct competition with our NIL efforts for limited donation amounts.  We are NOT broke but the Foundation IS broke when it comes to paying buyouts and new salaries.  We can't use any of $200 million athletic department budget for football coaches.  And perhaps more importantly, we can't use any of our facilities or whatever to raise money for NIL.

Basically you have two competing fiefdoms with different interests who depend on Arkansas athletics for their existence.  It's going to take someone who understands all this with the talent and ability to take on entrenched political interests to fix it.  HY doesn't even try to do it.  It is beyond his ability and he knows it.  It probably explains why he is so dispirited.  And probably explains his "we aren't set up to win championships" statement.  He literally means it.  The structure we have up there is from a different era and is actively hamstringing our efforts.

We're going to need laws changed on the state level and all kinds of things.  I'm not particularly optimistic.

I think the point of competing financial entities is a valid and important one.

Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Sep 21, 2025, 09:16 AMA two star $20 NIL player will smoke a five star $5 million player if  the expensive player half assed jogs around the field like our defensive players are doing.

This may be it. The $20 NIL players sees games like this as their opportunity to get noticed for a bigger payday. Our guys may or may not see NFL in the future, but for now they are content with their check.

I think someone said it during the game but we literally looked like a bunch of 7th graders afraid to hit anybody capped off by a 200lb backup QB trucking a nearly 400lb human being 8 fucking yards and that's not any kind of exaggeration either. That shit happened. I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched the horror unfold.

ALSO NOT A SINGLE OTHER DEFENDER TRIED TO GET INTO THE ACT.

WHERE IN THE HELL WAS THE SITUATION FOOTBALL? IT WAS 3RD DOWN AND LONG WITH A MINUTE LEFT. YOU FORCE THE PUNT AND THEN WE HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN.

AND WHY AM I TYPING IN ALL CAPS!!! ITS NOT LIKE I'M MAD ABOUT ANYTHING.

That was more Omega adjusting to the ball than a NFL type throw. That was a hell of a play by the DB or it was a highlight reel TD. We don't do highlight reels unless we're on the receiving end.
