Let me try.

"That 3rd down conversion with the Memphis back-up at 1 minute was the final straw.  Fuck, bring back Houston Nutt.  His teams never played that fucking soft.  Our defense is a large collection of passages.  Todd Day was more of a man vs. Larry Johnson than that squad playing out there.  We need it to be raining men."
"That's embarrassing.  Looks like Josh Duggar the first time his parents asked him to babysit."

For $7 mil I'll put a webcam in front of my shitter so I can answer fan questions while I drop the Longhorns off in College Station.

Quote from: Barton Fink on Sep 20, 2025, 08:58 PMCorrect. Effort is a talent.

Effort is a talent.

It's generally not the one that gets rated in recruiting rankings, or what people are talking about when they say a team is outmanned.

Effort is a skill that is highly coachable.  If you have players with the requisite athletic ability a good coach can get them to produce, and a poor one cannot.

A good friend of mine who has connections to Pittman's staff goes and watches practice from time to time. He says that Pittman just sits in a golf cart and occasionally yells for about 75 percent of practice. The other 25 percent is spent going around to various position groups and "observing" drills, or photo opportunities with visitors.

That kind of ineptness and laziness is why we've seen the product diminish since 2021. I also recall at his intro presser he came up with the tears and talked about how this was his "dream job" and it wasn't about the money, then as soon as they won 9 games he shit cans his agent and hires Jimmy Sexton and says show me the dollar signs. Fuck him.

A golf cart?  Yeah no one's going to bust their ass in practice for a coach who won't even walk around. Assistant coaches included.

Yep.  "I got paid regardless, I don't care that much. I can hit the portal and do it all over again." I bet Sorey wasnt even upset over the game
No pride, no allegiance, no F's given. The fans care WAY more than they do.
The same people demanding everyone embrace your beliefs, have zero tolerance and condemn another for embracing theirs.  Oh, the irony.

This is largely a semantic debate. I personally don't think effort is a talent, because effort is something you can consciously choose to have and do and you can change yourself if you're not naturally inclined.

I can't choose to have a 36" vert or have great hand-eye coordination or be 7 feet tall.

I am beginning to wonder if Big Fat Sam has told the assistant coaches that they will not be here next year, along with him and they are just going through the motions and getting paid.
Well, shit...

No time to be cryptic.  Name these folks so we can shame them for their retardation.

Maybe that was the "final" straw, but remember we were still behind at that point.  Maybe if we had actually scored on down on the goal line instead of fumbling, that third down conversion might not have happened.  There was less than what, 1:30 or so left.  We needed to take the lead.  In my view that is where the game was lost.

Yeah, I think most everyone thought the defense looked like dogshit in both the first 2 weeks despite the final score.

Many of us were calling out how bad we were at tackling after week 1. There were tons of missed tackles and second chance yards against Alabama A&M, which reared its head against ASU and has only since gotten worse.

After game one I did think the defense was better than what we saw.  I thought they would make a huge leap from game 1 to 2.  Game 2 solidified we have major issues.  Guys being out of position as much as they were was mind blowing.  I still can't believe how bad they are at the technical part of the game.  I get being bad because of talent but to not know how to drop back into coverage...crazy.

Frank Broyles sat 20-30 rows up in the stands and watched most practices from there.  Bear Bryant had a tower he sat on, rarely coming down.  But they both knew exactly what was going on and effort wasn't usually a problem for their teams.

A two star $20 NIL player will smoke a five star $5 million player if  the expensive player half assed jogs around the field like our defensive players are doing.

I've never seen a team that actively appears ro be trying to NOT make a play.  I mean you see lack of effort individually from time to time but the whole damned team jogging out there?

buff2.0

Walked 20 rows into the bleachers. Stepped up into a tower. Sat on a golf cart.

Two of those three had players who knew they would get out on the field and kick their ass if they loafed. The glaringly obvious issue ISN'T simply where the coach sits to watch practice, but that the players know which coach is too lazy and soft to discipline them.

Managing people is hard work.  I mean you have to be demanding and consistent.  And that's not just being a dick.  You have to actively engage so that you know what is going on.

Sam doesn't have that and he never has.  He can't do it with players and he can't do it coaches.  Odom was his secret sauce.  Odom knew how to run a program.  Sam is lost without him.  Petrino obviously knows how to do it too, but their styles are too different for it to work, Petrino can't run a team through Sam and Sam just fucks things up by being around and doing his aw shucks routine.

jdcatty

I believe the transfer portal has pretty much killed fear as a motivator for these players of today.

Not sure I agree.  I see offensive players busting their ass.  I see receivers blocking downfield like their lives depend on it, I see seldom-used TE's playing hard as shit to get playing time.  I see RB's running hard, seems maybe TOO hard to the point of not protecting the ball enough.

I don't see that effort on the defensive side at all.  Not even a smidge of it.  Does the transfer portal not work the same on the offensive side of the ball?  Fear of getting your ass chewed is a motivator regardless of whether you can "quit" and leave or not.

PorkyPig

T Will can be the first to go as far as I'm concerned.  I don't think he could coordinate a goat fuck.

Agree on all of this. Our defensive effort is Chad Morris level. They seem inept to do anything correct.

The defense is so bad that the reports of tension on the staff make sense.  I wonder if T Will got his feelers hurt by all the attention Petrino got and how some people were instantly talking about him as a successor to Pittman.
