Something I thought about last night...too late to do anything about it of course.

If you're able next year, and you don't approve of the halftime show/ads/NFL in general, watch the game on over the air TV rather than streaming.  Make it difficult if not impossible for them to count you as a viewer when they sell ads for the following year.

The Nielsen ratings still pick you up even over the air.

A little AI for the "are nielsen ratings still relevant for over the air broadcasts" question...

Yes, Nielsen ratings remain highly relevant for over-the-air (OTA) television, serving as the primary currency for advertising rates and programming decisions despite the rise of streaming. While OTA viewership has dropped below 20% of total TV usage, Nielsen has adapted by integrating "Big Data + Panel" measurements from 45 million households to better track live, antenna-based viewing and out-of-home audiences.
Industry Standard: Nielsen still controls an estimated 80% to 90% of the national TV currency market.
Advertising & Decisions: Nielsen data determines advertising rates (upfronts) and whether shows are renewed or canceled.
Modernization: To combat accuracy issues, Nielsen now uses data from smart TVs and set-top boxes, enhancing their panel-based, "Big Data + Panel" approach.
Local Importance: In specific markets, over-the-air usage is still significant (e.g., over 27% of homes in Houston).
While criticism exists, particularly regarding accuracy in the streaming era, no other firm has yet replaced Nielsen as the industry's standard.

How do they pick them up?  It seems like it would at the very least be more difficult with OTA versus streaming or a set top box of some kind.

I assume "they" do what they did in the old days before the invention of the adobes.  The Nielsen ratings have been around since the 1950s.

"Nielsen ratings for television started in 1950, when A.C. Nielsen began measuring TV audiences using audimeters and diaries in a sample of U.S. homes, building on his earlier work in radio audience measurement. The company acquired Hooper Associates in early 1950, leading to the first national Nielsen ratings being released in March 1950, covering data from late February/early March."

Aren't you old and supposed to know these things?  ;D

Didn't watch and nothing of value was lost.

I did forget Hunter Henry was on the Patriots and why I might have watched, but oh well.

They used to pay people to have boxes on their TVs or report what they watched.  Which is why I thought that, given the fact that I do neither of those, if I watch OTA TV they wouldn't know.

If it's thru a smart tv chances are they know because the tv is constantly sending telemetry back to the mother-ship regardless of what is being watched. I'm sure a feller can block a certain amount of that out with stuff like Unbound, Adguard, or Pihole but "they" will probably count those dropped packet traffic as hits.

Just like with your cell phone not actually connecting to a network it's still scanning and getting ssid hits and somehow or another they've managed to use that data in conjunction with bluetooth as a means of tracking your position within x amount of accuracy. The big companies and gov have manged to carve out plenty of ways of data scraping and this is just the stuff we know about.

First game I watched this year. About 2 quarters worth. Some of the most boring football I've seen in years. I've decided that since all the NFL wants to do is insult my values, I'll pass on their product.

I didn't know that.  Interesting.

Probably true and I'm not sure I want to know just how in depth their tracking of my habits might be.

My predominant thought anytime I think about Alexa listening in or my TV or browsing habits being tracked is not "how dare they!" Instead, I just want to apologize to the watchers for being so boring. Sorry to waste your time, you are free to move on to a terrorist or kiddie diddler or something.

If they are watching me, they are probably wanting to poke their eyes out with sharp sticks, or beating themselves in the kidneys until they piss blood.
Well, shit...

Back in the 80s on the CBS evening news they did a report on people's tv viewing habits. I dont remember if was Nielsen that was doing the study or someone else, but they had cameras taping people when they had the tv on. One clip showed a couple making out. I wonder if the couple did more than that.

One amusing side effect of this whole episode is that really, really old people like my parents now know who Bad Bunny and Kid Rock are.

The bad bunny halftime was not that bad and I expected worse. For everyone bitching about not being able to understand the language, how is that any different from listening to someone from the delta with a heavy Cajun accent - you have no idea what they are saying either.

It was better than Kendrick Lamar. Much better.

Yes, I'd rather hear anything other than rap.

Or what about someone appreciating Pavarotti or Bocelli?

I've even heard crazy talk there is such a thing as music without any words atall!

I just don't understand getting so bent out of shape over 20 minutes of something that's easily avoided if one is so inclined.  And something that affects one's life not the least bit.

What about Paganini? What about Steve Vai playing Paganini on guitar?
