Quote from: Barton Fink on Sep 19, 2026, 07:23 PMLast year was an awful year to be looking. The year before would've been much better.

That said, I still didn't think we are gonna attract a solid coach until we're more competitive in NIL. We're gonna keep trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

You can attract a solid coach. All coaches want to make money. Just have to pay them and stop being timid.

The bigger problem is not many ADs want to hire their boss.

Most people don't understand the power a successful head coach obtains at Arkansas.

We need competitive NIL to attract a coach.   People with means and a bit of brain power don't want to light their money on fire by entrusting it to the morons running the show.

The time to fire Pittman was after 2023, when we still had a mid pack player payroll and we weren't competing with half the country in hiring.

This.

Said this at the time, but the time to fire Pittman was in 2023, or put him to pasture after the 2024 season when we went 6-6 but blew yet another lead to Mizzou.

No one was hiring in those cycles, especially the 2024 cycle when no SEC job came open.

The story of Arkansas football - a day late and several dollars short on every critical decision.

Fire Pittman after 2023, and roll the dice with whatever coaches are interested.  If they had hired someone not named Petrino back then none of us would have cared.  It's not halftime yet but Golding isn't looking like an awful hire for Ole Miss so far.  I'll wait until the end of the year to make a definitively stupid statement but we might have made the worst hire in the off-season.

Again.

For $7 mil I'll put a webcam in front of my shitter so I can answer fan questions while I drop the Longhorns off in College Station.

Once authored a post that critics claimed, "Was notaslibro level."

Having a simpleton AD is much more of a barrier to us hiring a coach than our current NIL spending.  If we had a competent AD the coach would have confidence that the funding issue could be fixed.

Every other program is playing 4D chess while Yurachek plays connect 4.

No proven coach will take it the way things are today. We settled for a mediocre G5 coach. Couldn't even get a good hire from G5.

Guys like Franklin wouldn't even give us the time of day. Lashlee feels like he has better support and a shot at winning with SMU in the ACC over us.

Lashlee's biggest obstacle was Yurachek being his boss here.   Don't know that for sure about Franklin but I suspect it was a factor.

It all works together though.  They know that any money they get here they will have to raise themselves because HY is useless.

Yurachek is playing tic-tac-toe.

At this point we have to get a coordinator (preferable an OC) from a P4 school.

Stein seems to be working out at UK. Granted, he stepped into a much better situation since Stoops was there forever and it's not like they were a shitshow.

Barnhill's maxim about a not hiring coordinator is bullshit in this day and age. Kirby was a coordinator. So was Dan Lanning. Same for Vegetables at OU.

Barton Fink

Yeah I'm in the camp of hiring someone that has been a proben coordinator in their career. It doesn't always work out but it seems like a little safer option.

Otherwise, you're rolling the dice when your coordinators come and go. Your hires define your faith. Too risky.

I don't think the decision process has changed...just our place in the pecking order.  We aren't able to attract a proven head coach.

Venables is mid at best.   If he were at Arkansas his record would be well below .500.

Either way, we need to hire a P4 OC for our next head coach if we're still dumpster diving.

No mid-major coach on a semi decent trajectory would want our job either.

Look at Memphis's schedule - they'll sleepwalk to 10 or 11 wins this year. Silverfield would have done better to stay there, make hay on that 2026 schedule, and take a better job.

That guy that was at A-State after their succession of Freeze, Malzahn etc that ended up staying for a long time. That's basically what we hired. A guy that didn't build shit he just kept it in the road. He's being asked to do something here he was never asked to do there. It's one of the many reasons it was a terrible hire.

Also if you really want to know what we're doing I recommend checking out Power Hour.

How do we know that Silverfield was being patient and selective for his next gig? Maybe he tried other P4 openings for quite some time, we were just the first one to finally offer.

DirkPiggler

My gut is that Sexton (HY's agent) was pushing Silverfield because he knew that was Ryan's only chance at a massive payday.

I mean, if we were truly concerned with saving money we apparently could have hired the guy OSU took for a little over half what we're paying now.  If nothing else we'd have a first round QB instead of the KJ and AJ show.

We are, as always, the home for Sexton's least employable clients.  Apparently now it extends to ADs as well as coaches.

It's clearly apparent that we made the worst hire in the sec this year, but most likely the worst hire in all of fbs. There's no way HY can be allowed to continue to hire our future coaches. But even more important than that is nailing his replacement. I personally think, or would prefer, it be someone with Arkansas ties or roots. If JFB did one thing right, he understood how important the razorbacks are to the state.

Who would be on that list and what are there pros and cons?
