The Gus Bus retired.  https://seminoles.com/news/2026/2/2/football-malzahn-announces-retirement-harris-promoted-to-offensive-coordinator

I hope the Springdale Cult doesn't see this as their opportunity to make him the AD.

From the Rant:

As announced this morning, Gustav Malzahn has retired from coaching.

One part of the famed Barner Boom Brothers, he sunk into the depths of shit after completely losing control of the program. After a mediocre stint at UCF, he was hired by Free Shoe U to be the OC, contributing to a stunning 5-7 steamer of a season for the Seminoles.

Not only did he create the chain of events that created the muckfire that is Auburn, he singlehandedly changed the FSU offensive scheme (again), which will undoubtedly have massive effects on the program for years to come, as no one in their fucking right mind wants to play for that shit.

What a sad day for the rest of college football.

Also prayers up for Alabama, they just lost their daddy

For $7 mil I'll put a webcam in front of my shitter so I can answer fan questions while I drop the Longhorns off in College Station.

At least Gus had the dignity to retire...Houston Nutt still out there pretending he wants to coach. People calling him yaw.

Still it's kinda neat to think Gus may be more hated (3 schools) on the way out than Nutt was. Gus probably could have had our gig (again) but maybe he had already told our top thank tank that he's retiring soon. I do appreciate that didn't take that free money. Hell he could have probably told HY that and they still try to hire him. These older coaches mostly are noping out and the game is going to be filled with younger coaches in over their heads dealing with millionaire athletes with little or no oversight.

Good for him.  Whether you like him or not, he's one of the huge success stories of college football.  From Hughes, AR to the top of college football is something almost all coaches only dream about.  I always enjoyed working for him.

You only have to drive through Hughes once to marvel at it.

I wonder if HY will try to outbid retirement.

Consensus seems to be that a Mississippi judge will file and injunction which will allow him to play.

NCAA's only play then would be to make Ole Miss ineligible for post-season play.  That could be fun either way.

Gus AND the leader of the Warriors came from the Hughes metro.  I wonder if that metro includes Greasy Corner.
Splash 11! drop ABE track, too confusing

While not good for us this was the right call. At least when we play them this season he won't be a backup.

vegashog

how was it the right call?

He'll only need 2 more years to graduate.

he has a bachelors and a masters. working on another postgrad degree.

this guy's situation is little different than most. has only played two seasons due to multiple injuries he had to have surgery on. plus he still had a covid season.

Yeah, just being a smartass. I'd like to see the graduation data in a few years for the multiple transfer players.

It still shouldn't happen, but the NCAA brought this on themselves by arbitrarily handing out or denying waivers due to medical hardship or other reasons.

The best way to fix the problem going forward is to set a firm policy on number of years of eligibility.  If that policy is five years to play five as they seem to be considering, then that's what you get regardless.  If you redshirt as a freshman and then blow out a knee at the start of year five, that's too bad but you are out of eligibility.
Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

BleedinRed

Redshirts are stupid.  You should only get four years to play.  They don't have to be consecutive.  You get hurt, have to sit out a year then you play the next.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

vegashog

i have no problem with medical redshirts. legit injuries that required the player to miss time shouldn't be a penalty.

then there's the chambliss shit. complained about a sore throat at the start of the 22 season, didn't play because he was 4th string, and at the end of the season told the team doctor he was fine. at the ncaa hearing neither he or the school could produce anything that said he missed time because of a sore throat, and that's why the ncaa denied him. he got a fancy lawyer and a homer judge for the injunction. there was no 'it's the right thing' about it. we'll see if the ncaa appeals.
