All Nutt had to do to make it to the Hall of Fame was compile a .333 winning percentage in these games, each of which his teams should have won.  If he had won half of these he'd probably still be our coach, and most of us would love him.

That doesn't even count games he pissed away while at Ole Miss, like Jacksonville State.  Four more wins over his career would have gotten him in.

Four more wins against inferior opponents.

Answering my own question, amazingly here are the criteria for entry into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach:

"A coach becomes eligible three full seasons after retirement or immediately following retirement provided he is at least 70 years old. Active coaches become eligible at 75 years of age. He must have been a head football coach for a minimum of 10 years and coached at least 100 games with a .600 winning percentage."

There are 190 coaches in history who have won at a .600 clip or better, with maybe 20 of those failing to make the service criteria (I didn't go through and count).

So it's not a very high bar, making it even more pathetic for those who couldn't step over it.

Speaking of pathetic, dear old Burt is at .599. He needs to go 8-5 or better this season to qualify. Does he really SEEM like a Hall of Fame coach?
