And you will probably never be convinced, no matter who tells you that.  I know of a number of officials who, if they were told they couldn't have another job and officiate, they would stick with their full-time job rather than take a huge pay cut. 

If you had two jobs making $200k per year total ($150k at your full time job and $50k at the part time job) and your part time job said, "We want to make you full time and we will double your salary, but you have to quit your other job," you wouldn't take a $100k pay cut for that second job.  You would keep the $150k job that you already have.  You wouldn't put your livelihood in jeopardy just to do something you enjoyed doing. 

Running off the current officials and professionalizing it is a feature, not a bug.

The fact that the officials work for conferences is a problem unto itself.  Not because I believe the conference overtly influences outcomes or officiating decisions, although as a Hog fan you have to wonder sometimes. 

It's like the deal in elections with widespread mail in voting.  It's not so much the actual fraud (in most places) as it is the appearance of such.  Leagues should want to avoid any possible avenue for accusations of malfeasance.  When you have an Alabama alum calling a Tide game or a guy whose name ends in -eaux calling LSU games, people are going to ask questions any time a close call goes in favor of those teams, even if the officials in question are as honorable as humanly possible.  And of course there are out of conference games where league officials are accused of protecting their conference's teams (I know this doesn't usually apply to us as Hog fans, but other SEC teams run into it on the road). 

Why couldn't we have southern-based crews working Big 10 games or northeastern crews in the SEC?  Or better yet, have a white hat from the SEC footprint, line judge from Kansas, umpire from Ohio, etc to cut out any appearance of regional bias.

I do believe in the conspiracy that if a team is close to the playoffs and conference championship standings, they absolutely get the benefit of the doubt and those 50/50 calls, provided the game isn't in doubt to make it obvious.

I think it's coordinated. There's too much money at stake.

I'm well aware that anyone can be replaced, but replacing them doesn't mean you will get a better result.  For instance, see the history of Arkansas football coaches.

Maybe that is part of the problem...that so many of the officials are in high-earning, high stress jobs.  I know for example that our nemesis Curles was a financial advisor of some sort.  It's feasible that a stressful week in their primary job could translate into a less than stellar performance on Saturdays due to being distracted or just plain exhausted. 

I don't think anyone would suggest paying officials $100K per year, at least not at the highest levels.  If you're a full time official calling Big Ten or SEC games you should probably be paid at least as well as position coaches, meaning at least $250K and up.  They would need to pay a high enough salary to entice those guys with high paying jobs to switch to officiating full time. 

My biggest question is, what do they do in the offseason? I'd suggest watching 30-40 hours per week of game film, running camps for lower level officials to try to get the next generation ready, and of course working spring football when the time comes. Maybe even have them shadow NFL mini camps and OTAs.

I can't imagine anyone paying college officials $100k per year.  From what I hear, the schools don't want to pay as much as they do now and the officials don't make anywhere near that amount.  But, if you could talk them into paying $250k, you would definitely get a lot more guys willing to give up their 9-5 to become full time officials. 

As far as the off-season goes, the vast majority of the P4 officials are doing all those things you mentioned.  They may not be watching 30-40 hours of film each week (they are watching some film), but they are all working camps to help the lower level officials get better, working spring football, etc.  The ones that are on the NFL's prospect list are working NFL clinics alongside NFL officials.  Some of the officials at the P4 and G5 levels are working NFL practices every week even if they aren't on the NFL's prospect list.
