I spent that summer working in a wallpaper warehouse in Memphis.  The upper racks were in the 135 -140 range, so they started having us work 3am to noon.  But it would cool off at night.

What I remember most about that summer was George Jones was no showing big shows but sleeping in his Lincoln in the parking lot of the Wagon wheel honky tonk on Lamar, playing for tips.  No one knew it except the regulars, which I found out about from a coworker.  Went and saw him play, bought him a couple of whiskeys and put two bucks in his tip jar.

When it's in the 98 range at 4am it's fucking hot.

BASS

Being older the heat is definitely harder on me than I ever remember in my youth.

A couple weeks ago in Florida they were having record highs in the mid and upper 90's, which wouldn't have been so bad but with Central Florida humidity it was hot. 65% humidity when it's 96 degrees and walking around theme parks in the sun took its toll on me.  Couldn't stay hydrated enough, took days to recover.

In Jr high and high school I would do 5-6 mile ribs in the summer when it was mid-90s and get up and do it again the next day.

Try being the 1B coach in the middle of July on a turf field. One of the parents had a thermometer and it read 128. Pigeon Forge last year during July. Hydration is key, and not being old

Yesterday We were at San Luis Pass between Galveston and Freeport.  Not quite as far as Corpus.

But, it was 95 and felt like 95.  Felt like any other hot July summer day as the beach.

Not sure how 93 can feel like 125.  I guess if you were trapped in a car.

Also, Texas beaches suck ass.

While we're on the subject of "we were tougher when we were younger", when and why did Americans become so fat?

I attended grades 1-12 from 1961-1973 in Arkansas and it seems like everyone I went to school with was skinny.  Every photo I have from back then showed lean men, women and children. Even the kids we called "chubs" or "fatso" back then would be looked at as slightly overweight today.

I completed an Ob/Gyn residency in 1985 that served mostly low-income inner city patients. A 200 lb pregnant woman back then was considered shockingly obese. I returned to that same residency to teach from 2009-2022 and the typical obstetric patient weighed 230-240 lbs with 350 lbs not being at all uncommon.

Unhealthy fast food being available 24/7 on every corner in every town doesn't help but that can't be the only reason.

We're also just lazy as shit and always looking for the easy way to solve problems.

Had a guy come into a gym I was training in one time looking for some self-defense tips, I guess because he was scared of his apartment's parking lot. Instructor said "Grab some gloves and we'll start teaching you how to fight. We're here three nights per week."

No joke the guy said he just wanted a few techniques he could practice in front of the mirror and that he'd go find them elsewhere. I think I told him to just write out his will.

Especially for men everything about society tells us to be gentle, clean, domesticated, kind, soft-spoken.... To just be a really nice guy. Well this is what you get. Most men are weak and overweight or are testosterone-free vegans with boyfriends.

Sugary drinks, lots of grain carbs and starchy foods. If you follow the food pyramid, you're guaranteed to get fat.

Go to the grocery store and you will see why. When I've dieted and added lots of veggies to my plate, the grocery bill has gone up 3x as high.

Same for fast food. The healthier options are the highest priced.

This is it.  The low fat movement saw and increase of sugar in all foods.  Low fat on the box, sure, but there's 30 grams of sugar per serving.

The food industry has also encouraged snacking.  When FNG was a kid, I'm guessing he had breakfast before school, lunch at school, and dinner at home.  Now kids have granola bars (full of sugar and refined grains) in their backpacks for mid morning snacks and peanut butter crackers for mid afternoon snacks. Probably something else when they get home from school.  Dinner at 6:00 and something again before bedtime.

Boxed goods and all the unhealthy crap has seen the most inflation. That sugary cereal you fat bodies eat is $7 now.

I think another big difference between "back then" and now is activity. As Buff pointed out, we've become lazy. Being inside has now become more entertaining with video games, social media and streaming services and a whole lot more comfortable than being outside due to interior climate control.

As a kid during summer breaks, all my friends and I were literally up and outside with the sun and--except for being dragged back in for meals--we didn't come back inside until long after dark. We played ball, wrestled, rode bikes, had dirt clod wars or played kick-the-can all day long.

Of course, our houses were not air-conditioned and were miserably hot, video games and digital media didn't exist and the one or two TV stations unfuzzy enough to actually watch were filled with boring game shows and soap operas.

The problem with the food pyramid was that it didn't separate whole grains from refined, and as a result we have been consuming way too many processed carbs that break down into sugar.  Focus on whole grains and you don't have a terrible model.  The new MyPlate is still a lot better.

How corrupt is the food industry?  McDonald's was able to get some of their products endorsed by the Heart Foundation for a measly $300,000 annual donation.

Not sure which Walmarks you go to but he would be lucky to crack the top 10 on Sunday morning at 7am at mine. 😂

Since we veered into fatness, if you ever want to lose a lot of weight fast get your doc to prescribe Ozempic.

It absolutely killed my appetite.  I am on it for diabetes but it is getting prescribed for weight loss for some people.

It seems sketchy and I don't think I would recommend it but you will cut some weight if it doesn't kill you.  I hope I get some of my appetite back some day.
Splash 11! drop ABE track, too confusing

BASS

I've been trying to lose a little weight this year. I'm down about 15 pounds since February just trying to eat less... I was bad about overeating.

Now I can't eat as much as I could before in one sitting, like half, and a lot of times I have very little appetite.

I need to lose about another 15 pounds to get where I want to be.

AOD 9604 Peptide.  Vintage Muscle has a topical spray but it also includes epiandro and will mess with your body's hormone levels if you don't cycle it.  I think they have a pure AOD 9604 spray coming out in a few weeks that you can take as long as you need it.

Pretty sure if you are prescribed Ozempic for weight loss and not diabetes your insurance won't cover it and it's pretty expensive. There is a risk of pancreatitis as well. I know a few people who have lost a lot of weight on it though.

Celebs are taking it like crazy.  Not sure I'd risk it.
