Quote from: FNG on Jul 19, 2023, 08:13 PMGet back to us in mid-January.  ;D

I'll be back in DFW in mid-Oct. I'm looking forward to the late Jan/early Feb DFW ice storm where we lose power for 24-48 hrs.
I need help and I know it.

FNG

Several years ago I had a next-door neighbor in NWA who took a new job in Appleton, WI. They moved in midsummer and he would phone and rave weekly about how wonderful the weather was and how magnificent the autumn colors were.

Then winter came and the glowing reports began to dwindle. His last call from Wisconsin came in January when he said he had climbed in his car that morning and his steering wheel had snapped in half when he tried to turn the wheels.

They moved back to NWA that February.

I'd rather be in Colorado than jackson MS in the middle of the summer.
Yep. I'm not trying to be a dick about it. It could have lived. It didn't. Not by my choice. -Elvis

I'm going to have a generator by this winter!  Anyone know a good generator company in the DFW area?  Want a NG one.

88 and sunny on Saturday. The south is unbearable!

We have some old Jenbacher 320's on our yard in Garland. We have them listed at $200k but I could probably get you few dollars off.

Might be a bit of overkill.  Looking at just something to power the house at least during the winter and run at least some of the AC units in the summer, not the whole neighborhood.

I COULD wire it up myself, but would rather have someone do a pad, park the generator with a housing and hook up all the NG fittings and wire it up as well.

Pretty soon the democrats will ban those too.  You want a generator?  It's going to be powered by electricity!

Or something, idk.  They're fuckwits.
"That's embarrassing.  Looks like Josh Duggar the first time his parents asked him to babysit."

For $7 mil I'll put a webcam in front of my shitter so I can answer fan questions while I drop the Longhorns off in College Station.

I've always wanted one here in Corpus Christi due to hurricanes, but have never pulled the plug.

Got a quote for one last year, ~$17K, turn key installation for a 22kW.

This seems like a good deal

Just need a place to put it and someone to hook it up.

Unfortunately, the generator is the cheapest part of the initial cost.

I'll see if I can find my quote and list it here.

Transfer switch in the electrical panel.
Wiring from panel to the generator.
Gas line from the easement to the generator.
Pad for the generator.
Permits, etc.

I used a local company in NWA after getting a quote from generatorsuperstore and saved a few thousand dollars. Same installation and same generator. It kicked on one time this Spring during a thunderstorm and everything operated as it should. It also kicks on once a week for maintenance.

I'm hoping mine is cheap:

Generator location to the main panel is about 10 feet, through one outside wall.
There is a pretty major gas line for the pool heater about 6 feet from where I want to put the generator
Will need a pad
Will see about permits

Need to see how big I need/want.  I probably don't need to run all 3 AC units in 100 deg+ heat, as I can just run one and stay in that part of the house if needed.  The main thing is to run the Trane unit which is mostly just a big ass fan in the winter and I guess keep the pool equipment going if there is a power outage to keep that shit from freezing, but have heat trace on all the above ground lines now, just needs electricity.

Sometimes at travel soccer tournaments, I'll hear trashy parents make the tired old joke "well, at least we don't have to go back and live in Arkansas".  I don't engage, but my thought is always the same: do they think we hate where we live, and aspire to live in [Oklahoma / Texas / Louisiana / Tennessee]?  Of course they don't think that deep down; they're defaulting to this overused sleight because they're getting their asses beat and lashing out.

I feel the same about the "I don't even use my AC" crowd.  Yes, I'm aware that higher latitudes have lower temperatures, and I deliberately live in Fayetteville anyway.

You may be able to connect 2, maybe all 3 of your AC units.  The guy explained to me that it's the heating unit that will max out the capacity of the generator than ac will.

From what I understand, the 24kW Generac is the largest air-cooled unit.  Anything past that, is going to be oil-cooled.

Your locations, from main panel and gas line, are ideal, as they quoted me $18/ft after the base 20 ft for the electrical.

I looked into it several years ago and I can't remember what the KW was but at one point the price increase significantly over a certain KW.  May have been 24.

Not sure why that one is so fucking expensive?

I mean, 24kw is still probably overkill since unless my math is completely wrong, that is like 200A and my house doesn't pull 200A even when full load.  Could probably

Did their calculator and the 18kw one came out as more than plenty, but would probably go a little over, especially if I wanted to be nice and help power some shit for my neighbors with extension cords if needed.

Based on what I paid that's a great price on the Guardian unit. That's the same size and model that we have and we have a 200A panel in our house. I will tell you that we have two heat pumps for heat and we do not want them to come on at the same time, which could be a concern if we're not home when an outage occurs in cold weather. If you have gas heat then the Guardian will be a great unit for a 200A panel.
GeneratorSuperstore tried to sell us switches for each breaker. Said it was necessary to regulate the power. But I had Kimbel Services do the work and the tech said they were not necessary and that was what you panel is for. They added another panel next to our existing meter for the controls and the hook up was simple. Since I live in the country I had to add a propane unit to run the generator which upped my costs.

Thanks, I'll start calling people and see how much the install and such will be.  I'll probably have the pool guy take the heater out since it is super old and I'm afraid of it catching on fire and use that gas line with a T and a cap to run the generator which I intend to put about 5 feet away.  Can always get a new pool heater since the new ones are smaller and likely better than my 20-30 year old unit.  The pool guy was surprised it actually worked.  My goal is to keep it under or around 10k.  I think that is a good investment for the peace of mind of having heat/cooling and emergency power for foodstores.  Now to get a freezer and a bunch of meat.  Wife wants a freeze dryer for christmas/anniversary so that should also help with emergency food planning.  Just need an in-ground bunker now.  I SOOOO want to burry a small shipping container and have an underground passage to it as a shelter but there just isn't a good place anywhere to do it.  Next house...next house.

Why stop with a 20 footer when a 40 ft high boy only cost a little more.  Connect a 20ft to be your command post/mancave.  You might be down there a few years.
