I don't think the Tuohys went into this intending to profit financially off of Oher.

Most likely the conservatorship never ended because no one thought about it after he was out of the house and in the NFL. 

Their initial motivation was almost certainly focused on one thing...getting Mike to Ole Miss.  If he benefitted from it, and I'm sure he did, great, but that was secondary in the Tuohys' minds. 

I agree with Show Me that their best move would have been to settle this quietly and give Oher a cut of the proceeds from the movie if nothing else.

JFC are you that fucking obtuse or are you just trolling.  It's already been explained and a pretty well known fact, that if you take a net profit deal with Hollywood, you are going to get screwed.  That's why actors, directors and other people with enough leverage, negotiate deals based on gross revenues, not profits.  The two links below, pretty well explains how Hollywood screws people with net profit deals.
