Quote from: BASS on Mar 21, 2025, 08:21 AMi do not get all of the qb talk for the draft.  there are no great qb's this year.  some teams are going to mortgage their futures drafting sanders, ward, and some of these other guys.

Titans might draft one of these after a parade of r1 QBs and trades.  Levis is a bust.  Most teams have zero clue how to develop young talent into a nfl caliber qb.  Look at Dak.  He would have been drafted higher except for his DUI but he slipped and the other busts Jerry was wanting went elsewhere (Paxton Lynch, Christian hackenberg, Connor cook all garbage).  Dak really developed though when Garrett brought in Jon Kitna as qb coach.  He was not servrc by the group of career 3rd stringers otherwise coaching him(Garrett, Linehan, Moore) and fucking McCarthy didnt even interview Kitna. Dak just regressed and got fucking rich.

Most rookies aren't served being drafted by shit teams with bad coaches and FOs.

giants sign russell wilson instead of drafting another bust at qb.  maybe they are finally wising up.  one year deal, so if he sucks it won't hurt them long-term.

I haven't really paid much attention to this year's QB class. I guess Cam Ward is considered the #1 prospect. I like him but he's a bit small and also he's played like 17 years in college football so you'll be getting a maxed out player. This league has just gone to so many of these small marginal talent QBs that now all the sudden "they can play"...ok yeah compared to the other small QBs he can play and give you the same mediocre results. Remember when there was a "prototypical" QB and teams were locked in on that mentality. I guess both were wrong...you are going to get busts one way or the next.

So Pittsburg is headed toward Aaron Rodgers? That seems weird.

its strange how a guy that's good in college on a decent team like dak or purdy can excel in the nfl, but guys like dwayne haskins, justin fields, caleb williams, etc. struggle.  some of that has to be coaching.

In fairness to Haskins he did die when he caught a dump truck on a busy Florida freeway. But his career wasn't exactly taking off. Caleb Williams still has a chance to not suck. Fields will probably always be hit and miss but still rebound to have a Geno Smith type of career as a ho hum starter.

Ohio State QBs have generally been fairly not great in the NFL...Barrett, Pryor, Smith, Jones, Haskins and I'm probably forgetting a couple. Coaching college QBs in these HUNH approaches has hurt QBs at the next level because for the most part they aren't taught how to really go thru a passing progression the way that you would need to in the NFL.

College passing can certainlly be prolific but more so because the game is geared to allow every opportunity for the offense to score. The NFL for all it's flaws does generally do a little better being even handed aside from don't dare hit the QB. But basically it comes down to WRs are running wide open in college because your best athletes are playing WR and not corner. In the NFL you have to be a lot more cognesant of where and what might be there pre-snap and know how to adjust depending on the play goes. It's got to be a very quick decision followed by a very quick release. Any deviation and it's probably getting picked off, swiped at, or just incomplete. And none of that really goes into how horrendous blocking is especially at the next level because again colleges can't/won't develop offensive linemen.

Most college QBs can't go up to the next level, same as most high school QBs can't play in college.

NFL QB is the most challenging role in all of sports.  There's not 32 men each season in the world that can excel at the position, yet it's the most important.  So it drives values up.  Conversely, the level of talent at the other positions is far superior than any college team.

The speed of the game is geometrically faster.  The strength and power as well.  But the complexity is what really weeds out the imposters; defensive schemes are crazy complex and the blitz packages are many and well disguised.

The problem is until one is put into the fire you don't know if they can play.  So you end up with sure things like Tim Couch, Ryan Leach, and zach Wilson, and then guys like Tom Brady, Tony Romo, and Brock Purdy at the bottom,

I didn't play organized football and certainly not QB.  There is a Drew Brees/Stephen Colbert interview I watched a few weeks ago where Brees goes thru the calling of the play in the huddle - protection, routes, kill play, etc.  It was extremely complex (and I'm sure Brees did that intentionally) but even if you have an accurate rocket arm, the mental part of it has to be extremely complex.

Actually it was Strephen Colbert.

Geometrically? Like, diagonally, vertically, rhombusly?

Great article with eye opening stats.  18% hit rate for 1st round qb draftees.  That says something to NFL analytics, development, draft stupidity, and coaching. Total fail.

The league had a large exodus of experienced starting QBs about 5-7 years ago and hasn't really recovered. Also I think for a good deal of teams it's more about the sizzle and not the steak. Somebody somewhere thought they could sell more shit if they drafted XYZ new hotness player. Sprinkle in a bit of modern day DEI for added flavor or a modern day NFL version of it where teams ignore the basic tenets of drafting QBs under a certain height and weight. Is Murray in Arizona a success or just some guy that puts up some decent stat lines but overall you'll never win anything with him? Baker Mayfield is kind of the same thing...puts up some huge numbers in some games but just fucks up enough to where it's very unlikely he'll ever play for a ring. Russ Wilson is a small QB that won...but we're talking about an exception and not the rule. Wilson mostly won because he won the job over some dude that had one good game at Green Bay and ended up getting a decent contract with Seattle. Wilson was a cheap date that ended up paying off really well for the Seahawks who focused on defense defense defense in those years.

Give me intangibles over flashy any day that's why I would much prefer a guy like Hurts over the Kyler Murray's of the world. Arguably Wilson had those intangibles of not fucking up, moved the chains, did some good things and got out of the way and near the end of his career he's still seen as a viable option but no longer a threat to lead anyone to the Superbowl.

I think teams become a prisoner of the moment knowing they have to draft a QB and knowing they have to draft a QB high even though maybe the actual grade of that QB is mid-round talent. They reach because if they don't somebody else will. That's the mentality. Also you have franchises like the Titans that wouldn't know a starting QB if it hit them in the face. I'm not entirely sure that's incompetence or just flat out bad luck. Between coaching, management, and the player some of these teams just can't catch a fucking break.

The Chiefs for example went decades without drafting a solid starter so much so that they all but abandoned the idea through much of the 90s opting instead for veteran free agents. Eventually Mahomes happened...a gift from the football gods. The Chiefs got a lot more competent with Andy Reid's coaching so there is something to be said for that but there's no substitute for just flat out ball talent. What's that saying about snakes when you see your first Rattlesnake you'll know. Well that was Mahomes. And the experts didn't think a fuck ton about him either but I came away really impressed with him when he started for Texas Tech against Arkansas.

To me the real question on draft analytics would be for ANY position where these guys are traditionally drafted relative to their overall production as NFL players. Which players tend to have the highest percentage of production vs which positions tend to get the most flops. A RB drafted high that fizzles out is now drafted lower (cheaper) tends to hang around a while and may eventually be seen as productive. WRs now drafted higher are quickly called busts when it used to be a WR didn't contribute much for the first few years of their career. It's all a matter of perception and development. Also I think we're probably drafted a lot more WRs and DBs and far fewer OL and RBs.

Much like a lot of things these draft analytics are important. We don't know why but somebody is there to justify their lot in life even though the data shows they pretty much suck at their job. Way too many variables and nothing breeds success like availability and opportunity.

Can we blame the current state of the college game for lack of quality NFL caliber QBs?

Seems the "look to the sideline" before every snap and the focus on run first QBs has really diminished the developement and effected the talent pool.

I guess Elway killed Jeff Sperbeck (friend, former agent) today on a golf cart.
