The D1 Baseball guys speculated that something was wrong behind the scenes in Knoxville. They said he almost left for A&M each of the last 2 years.
The Lord wants you to put your foot on their balls and believe in it. 'Cuz that's what wins football games. Not jumping offsides like a bunch of wimps and faggots. I don't care what those pinkos over in Russia say. You want to be a loser? You go live in Russia. I'm a winner. I'm an American.

Was talking to a UT friend of mine who's pretty in tune with their things.  I told him my first call would be to Wes Johnson. He said he wasn't on the short list which surprised me.

He also didn't seem too disappointed that Vitello left.  Saying they are putting money into facilities, NIL, etc. everything he asked for and he still left.

Vitello is moving to San Francisco for the lifestyle not baseball.

I don't know about that. I'm talking about the lifestyle that welcomes 40+ year old single guys that have the George Michael attachment on their beard trimmer.

Well maybe my analogy was more on point than I thought.

It's the kind of move you have to make to get into the annals of baseball history.

I read somewhere that the AD keeps trying to route NIL funds from baseball to women's basketball. He didn't hire Vitello but he did hire the women's basketball coach. Please tell me UT is that dysfunctional.

First college coach to go straight to manager of an MLB team? Saw that post from TN and was shocked.

I think I read somewhere he's the first MLB manager to be hired with no MLB experience.

The Yankees hired Dick Howser when he was head coach at FSU, but he'd been a MLB coach and even interim manager in New York during a Billy Martin suspension a year or two prior to taking the FSU job.

I guess supposedly Vitello will make less as Giants manager than vols head coach. Lots more games and travel. Wonder what gives for him? Tired of NIL and recruiting?

he will make $200k more per than he did at tennessee, highest contract ever for a mlb rookie manager.  edit: 200k more, not 500k.

three year deal with vesting for a fourth (if he meets certain goals).

Yeah, I guess that's true. But how many managers have really gained significant notoriety that didn't play mlb or that even did for that matter? He had tn rolling and could have probably made some pretty good history there.

I guess I just figured he'd be getting a more significant raise. I'm sure he'll be bringing home quite a bit less with cali taxes, even with that raise.  But, the ceiling in mlb is also higher.  He was making more than a lot mlb managers at TN but also one of the top paid in college.

EDIT: Maybe you meant the one about NIL funds. That one makes more sense to me.

vegashog

unless he really sucks, he's on the mlb manager circuit. while nil might have been an issue, i think more importantly he won't have to deal the portal.

the giants have a good payroll (9th) and a really good director of ops in posey. it's not like he's going to a dog roster and owner. i suspect he'll do okay.
