To me, he is playing that well, but without the flair for the dramatic shot that Tiger had.  And his game is made for the US open.  Fairways and greens... But he is going to have to make some 8ft putts this week.

I spent most of this morning as a green side spotter on Hole 1. The hole is only playing at 395 yards so the players were hitting irons off the tee, leaving an approach of 130 yards or so. Today's pin was approximately 10-12 paces from the front.

If you are familiar with #2, you know the greens are basically inverted bowls averaging 6000+ square feet but with only about half of that being puttable without risking watching the ball roll completely off the green. This morning the greens were rolling at 13.5 feet and that was after an overnight shower.

It was interesting, to say the least, seeing some of the best players in the world hitting dead-hand wedge shots that dropped from outer space to 6 feet short of the pin and still watching the ball trickle off the green and back down the fairway.

This is why the USGA sucks sometimes. Hitting a ball 6 feet from the pin, and then get penalized for hitting a great shot by the ball rolling off the green. What a joke.

There have been fairways in the past that literally will not hold any shot and some greens from any fairway shot. I think they are few and just a slight miscalculation in set up. It happens and is part of it. The players know when a shot pin high six feet from the flag will end up off the green. It seems like the players that win put that shot 40 feet away and get it down in two.

It's not a great shot if it rolls off the green.  Hogan said that if you ever saw him hit it at the pin, it was a mishit.  On lots of greens in US Open he would intentionally aim for a spot off the green knowing that he would be far more likely to get up and down from off the green than make par on it or have it roll off to a bad spot.

Watching live at the us open on golf channel looking for fng. They just talked about this exact thing.

Yeah, occasionally the USGA goes a little crazy, like they did a few years ago on that course in Oregon (I think).  That was really screwy.

I don't expect that at Pinehurst.

Yeah, it's a pretty well known story.  After winning at Oakmont and not hitting one of its bunkers all week, some lady remarked to him as he came off the course that he sure had been lucky that week not to hit any.  Hogan dryly remarked that it seemed that, "The more he practiced, the luckier he got."

The way I heard that story was: a guy was watching Gary Player practice sand shots. He made 2 in a row and the guy said he was lucky. That's when Player replied "The more I work and practice, the luckier I seem to get."You cannot view this attachment.
