Arkansas vs Auburn

I don't think it's been mentioned but we had some big runs from Hill and Russell in that final drive. Jackson was about spent and Hill came in and got a big run on 3rd down setting up a 4th and short. Russell showed he can be that bowling ball to pound at defenses in the 4th quarter that Petrino has been known for...this is good. Petrino is always looking for his next Michael Bush and Russell may be it.

My early thoughts on Russell is you have to give that kid a bit of a hole to run thru he's got to get a head of steam before making his own hole. There were a few of those runs where Auburn was right on top of him quickly and he couldn't power it for a few yards. Hill's little ass carried defenders for 9 yards on that one big run for him. Dubinion is no where to be found these days and I wondered if they'd get a veteran guy out there at some point on the road in the SEC...nope.

I think this offense evolves into a run first offense moving forward. The pass protection is horrendous, blitz pickup non-existent and Green will not stand there and take a hit and the guy can't process the field quickly enough. So we'll mix in a lot of option stuff and probably start running some just old fashion meat and potatoes type plays. A prime example of what I'm talking about is that TD pass to Sategna where he flushes out of the pocket and makes the throw. Ok...great. He saw what he needed to do from the pocket and instead of sliding to his right and getting the ball down the field he flushes and reacquires the target. If he see's it sooner and pulls the trigger it's an easy first down and 6 is probably running a long way...maybe not a td but that was a play meant to be a 1st down call.

Broden is horrendous but he got a PI call because the dude is 6ft 7...a smaller kid they would have probably said the ball was uncatchable. We have to get better at that spot though...Broden has regressed to his last season form after being talked up all off-season as "really coming on". CJ Brown playing over Jordan Anthony I'm not understanding either.

Quote from: TC on Sep 22, 2024, 12:06 AMThat 12 play, 75 yard drive that soaked up 6 minutes was ninja level BMFP. We all love his passing game, but he's great at the run game too. We ran the ball 55 times to their 26.

Kudos to Petrino.

Exactly.

Petrino didn't need to be told anything, no matter what any permanently disgruntled "fan" thinks.

On another note, all turnovers are not equal. Out of their 6, only two were in their territory. Here is the summary are with the result of each:

1 - INT at UA 19 - long TD drive that ate most of the first quarter

2 - FUM into end zone for a touchback - we went three and out and punted

3 - INT at AU 37 - Green threw it back to them the very next play

4 - INT at UA 8 - we kneeled to end the half

5 - DOWNS at AU 43 - Green threw it back to them three plays later

6 - INT at UA 34 - we moved 30 yards and kicked a field goal

The critic expecting a raw stat to result in a blowout would see that we scored "only" 10 points off six turnovers.

Not all turnovers are the same.

If Singleton comes in moving the ball he probably stays in the game. He got a taste of SEC Road so there's that. We'll see what happens in the future. That was a shot across the bow that Green needs to start taking to the coaching he's no doubt getting or he's gonna come out. I don't think either QB has really clued in that the speed of the game is much faster than anything they've ever encountered and this was against a team that might not win but maybe a couple SEC games this season maybe none.
The curious thing is that the national folks are way high on Green. Even Saban says he's a baller on Gameday yesterday. I think they only see the highlight reels, but he's getting some run over being a dynamic athlete.
If Saban saw a complete game reel of Green I bet he'd be saying "damn son."

Green has wheels, no doubt. I remember thinking Brandon Allen was maybe too quick a lot of time bailing on a play and throwing into the stands before taking a sack. Brandon weren't no bitch either. Just could see the pass wasn't there pretty quickly.

You're only looking at turnovers from one side of the coin. On the other side of the coin, turnovers 1, 2, and 4 prevented them from scoring.  The fact that we didn't score off of them, is kind of irrelevant.

No I wasn't.  Thanks for underscoring my point. We needed those turnovers to win, and it's not a failure that we didn't turn it into a blowout.

OK then we're in agreement. In this case, the turnovers took probably a -10 result to a +10. They had a 20-point effect, just not from 0 to 20.

Against OSU the turnovers probably took us from +7 or +10 to -8.

ETA: another data point in my long running theory that things even out over a season. A game we gave away due to turnovers, was evened out by a game given to us by turnovers.

i think russell needs to get down to brodrick green weight over the off season. the staff said that he's big and fast but right now only one of those seem true to me.

and yeah, teams will blitz the shit out of us because we are befuddled when it comes to protection.

i've read where we were gifted all these turnovers and that's not true. two of the int were just terrible throws, but hey, at least the db caught them. the other three were damn good plays. metcalf has to be the defense player of the week.

If you're donating big money like you claim, why would they need to keep calling? 😂

Metcalf was recognized with a "helmet sticker" on College Football Final.

Plus some favorable calls and a big non-call that we rarely get.

I just don't get people being upset we didn't win this game by a bigger margin, especially with so many recent data points as clear indicators what kind of team we are.

Is Metcalf playing for Clark? We're still missing Braxton too. Up until the whiff on the 4th and 4 tackle Johnson was playing among his best games...guy took a terrible angle. That would have been a easy first down even if he had made the tackle. There were 3 or 4 guys wide open that play...Arkansas was all out playing the run in a game where Auburn almost refused to run. They said it was a cover zero blitz and if it was it was a horrible one. Cover zero usually implies you have 11 guys coming. Not 4 guys playing patty cake and 3 others rushing the QB faster but slower but faster.

#13 Robinson played pretty well...I think he was another kid from Alabama. Some of our db play that was good might have been that Auburn was so bad but we'll take it. Slaughter was good too. Sorey has kind of fallen off I feel like...looks a bit lost at times and getting gobbled up.

in the SEC, that would be the Co-defensive player of the week

I think this is what people are actually upset about.  The fact that we didn't convert those turnovers into something just underscores it.

That was definitely not a cover 0 if you ask me.  It looked like the right play call to me, as we were selling out to pressure the QB or generate a sack, meaning, I think we were selling out to stop the pass, and our DBs should have been in position to stop the short dump route.  Obviously we were steps slow to get there.

vegashog

metcalf won the starting spot in fall camp, but we need clark back for the nickel package and depth.

sorey reminds me of a young bumper pool. he just takes off at the snap and gets out of position. he at least has the speed to kinda get back into the play.

The left side of our OL got their shit pushed in all game. Green always had to roll right because of it.

All I'll say is that things went our way in some regards...and we still lose that game maybe 70% of the time under Sam/Chad/Bert.

I'm just happy we walked away with a win.

We aren't playing well in many regards, but we should be 4-0 with two road wins, one over a ranked opponent.  There is a ton of meat on the bone to improve our play without changing the players.  That is a huge step up from some of the past season.  We have the players to compete with MOST teams we play.  Sure, we might need to play well, but that is what coaches are there for.  We will probably be completely out-talented in 2-3 games where there just isn't a way we are going to win.  The rest, there is a win there even if it requires us to play well and the other team to not play well.

So far this year we have played 2 teams with a pulse and have play WELL for a half.  We kicked the shit out of that team in that half we played well.  Play that well for a full game and we win a decent number of games this year.  I'm fine with that.

I have always said my dream for this year is 2009.  We are outclassed some games and struggle in others but you can SEE what is happening and how things are changing and going into the next year, you are legit fucking excited.  If we end this year in a similar place as we did in 2009, I'll consider that a huge fucking success.

I agree with you.  The big thing we need is to learn to win and not skid out of control when things aren't going our way.  If we had the right mentality, we win against Okie Lite.

Hogfan58

We better figure out how to pick up blitzes. We aren't good at it and Green usually ends up running for his life. Draws and screens might help. Backs blocking might as well.
I need help and I know it.
