Quote from: Son of Spam on Sep 22, 2024, 09:34 AMThe left side of our OL got their shit pushed in all game. Green always had to roll right because of it.

Except for that time he rolled to the left and threw the long TD to Sategna.

This team can look great and terrible in the same series.  That's from a ton of new players who occasionally make WTF kind of plays (yesterday's long Auburn TD, the once-every-other-series terrible snap, our QB throwing suicide passes for our WRs)

It would be a great year if we had 6-7 wins and a bowl.  Most preseason fans would agree with that. We are halfway there. Beat A&M, State, and La Tech, and we will make a bowl.  Anything short of that is a fail.  Anything more than that, and it is a fantastic season.

I agree, if we could get to 7 wins going into a bowl, it would really line up with the 2009 season...except I doubt we have #15 coming next year.

We can also still hope that Petrino is playing 4D chess. He wants them to think we can't pick up a blitz. :stache:

I love Jackson as a RB, but short of his suplex block yesterday, he sucks at picking up the outside blitz.

Realistically you are completely correct.  However, I'm going to be bitter and wail, gnash teeth, and tear at cloth losing to Texass, TN, and LSU at home.  We stand not even a prayer of winning any one of those... and they are the only 3 I give a shit about (emotionally).  If we had a winner's mentality, and played like the first half against Okie Lite, maybe, but we just aren't very good... and don't know how to win especially in adversity.

Right now, I want to beat A&M.  I'm sick of giving up games to them.  I also feel the same way about Mizzou and after last night's home survival of Vandy, I don't think that game is an automatic L.  They are not a top 10 team.

Quote from: animal on Sep 22, 2024, 07:44 AMI don't think it's been mentioned but we had some big runs from Hill and Russell in that final drive. Jackson was about spent and Hill came in and got a big run on 3rd down setting up a 4th and short. Russell showed he can be that bowling ball to pound at defenses in the 4th quarter that Petrino has been known for...this is good. Petrino is always looking for his next Michael Bush and Russell may be it.

Agreed.

Adam Ford said in his article this past week that — while he liked the little he'd seen from Russell and Hill — he found it a bit concerning that we were entering SEC play without having an established #2 back.

I think both of them complement each other and our run game well, and Russell might be the true short yardage back we've been needing.

I'd take this rotation of backs over Sanders, Green, and Johnson. Those guys couldn't find holes or manufacture yards after contact like this group (especially Jackson) can.

Russell looks a lot like Broadrick Green as a RB. He is a big guy who is tough to handle if he can take about three steps. If you make his feet stop, he is just a big guy who is going to fall forward for a yard.

I guess he literally picked up that blitz.

I think we have a shot at LSU. Often we play over our heads against them, for some reason, like we play under our heads against Missouri.

Quote from: Hogfan58 on Sep 22, 2024, 09:46 AMWe better figure out how to pick up blitzes. We aren't good at it and Green usually ends up running for his life. Draws and screens might help. Backs blocking might as well.
Even the usually reliable JJ completely whiffed on someone coming off the edge and almost got TG kilt dead.

Quote from: passed on Sep 22, 2024, 09:43 AMI agree with you.  The big thing we need is to learn to win and not skid out of control when things aren't going our way.  If we had the right mentality, we win against Okie Lite.

The good thing is that we didn't piss our pants after the 4th and 3 touchdown and hand them the game. That's been all too common in the Pittman era.

This squad dropped their nuts and manufactured a long TD drive to effectively put the game away.

Hopefully they keep that edge and mental toughness.

A&M, LSU, and Missouri are all beatable.  Note this is not a prediction that we will win any of these, but they aren't automatic write-offs either.

Last night's OU/Tennessee game was a preview of what our UT game will be.  I think we are every bit as good as OU right now.

Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

100% agree. Said to a buddy the other day, we're not as good as we want to be but we're not as bad as we think we are.

Quote from: Borenutz on Sep 22, 2024, 08:53 AMIf you're donating big money like you claim, why would they need to keep calling? 😂
When did I say I was currently donating big money? I threw in the towel during the Bert years. Positive move.

I'm guessing you're another t-shirt fan. The business school calls all the time no matter how much you give.

Quote from: red death on Sep 21, 2024, 06:30 PMHow was winning a game by 10 in the SEC on the road, that we weren't even favored in, an embarrassing, sloppy performance?

You do realize how stupid that is, correct?
He should, but he doesn't.

I think LSU will be a slow burn and end up being in the conversation at the end of the season. Missouri idk about them I think they are mainly good because it's a favorable schedule or at least about as favorable as you'll find in the SEC. Yep just looked and other than on the road at Bama they have winnable games the rest of the way. South Carolina could evolve into a decentish team that could give Mizzou trouble. OU is Auburn with a better PR guy.

The Power Hour guy has another good film review. He agreed the 4th down blitz was a great call but Johnson just took a terrible angle and overran Lambert-Smith's route.

He also pointed out the calls in our favor, although I disagree it makes us even for 2020.  Or 2010.  Or...
