Brady made substantially less than his peers; his last contracts were $25 mil a year.  He bought into the patriots way and wanted to win.  It helps if your wife is Giselle making a jillion bucks.  Now he's getting $37.5 from Fox.

Smart coaches who are somewhat desperate are doing this.

ADs who should be desperate but aren't should be forcing their underperforming coaches to do the same. 

It's worth noting that both Gundy and Norvell have far more onerous buyouts than Pittman, and are almost certainly more hireable elsewhere should they lose their current gigs.  Sam has apparently chosen the "fuck you, fire me if you don't like me" path rather than "lets work together to make the program better." 

And in fairness to Sam, it likely never crossed Hunter's mind to suggest it.  Sam may have been all in on something like this for all we know.

both have been here 6 years and have earned over let's say $8 million in that time. if they have managed their money (yea that is risky but I would hope they aren't living paycheck to paycheck) then it's not like they couldn't afford to give back a little.

I believe he did, and he's not the only player that has.  A number of players, both football and baseball, have allowed there contracts to be restructured over the years to give the teams more money to work with.

I believe I remember Romo and Aikman doing the same thing.

Big differences in restructuring and accepting less money, at least in terms of managing an nfl cap.

Brady took less money, far less than what the market would pay him, to give the team more cap. 

A restructuring of an existing contract is not costing a player a dime.  Two basic scenarios.  Convert salary to bonus.  Say you have 3 years left on contract at $10 mil a year.  We need space.  Convert this years salary to bonus.  Player gets $10 mill up front. But the cap hit now spreads over life of contract, so I made $7 mill of cap space as the bonus now adds $3.3 mill to each year.

The stupid thing teams like Cowboys do is add void years, which don't obligate player but allow team to spread further into future.  So that $10 mil adds 2 void years and so it gets spread as $2 mil a year over 5.  So if Dak has not been extended on that stupid contract, and left, Jerry had three void years on Dak that all accelerate to 2025. That would have been $40+ mil in dead cap.
