We'll see how that works out for UNC...but we seem to be seeing where some programs that have been either doormats or at least close to it jump up and be competitive all because of throwing money at a problem and hoping it fixes things.

If Arkansas' trend continues it seems we're the opposite of spending fuck you money on football knowing money won't solve the problem so we do nothing. Ok well they did blame the fans and ask for more money that they won't spend.

Would it currently be legal to have kids sign a contract? Say a two year deal with player and/or team options? X amount guaranteed and x performance incentive?

vegashog

not sure about the legality, but why would a player do that when he can transfer as many times as he wants and go to the highest bidder?

right now it would seem the only ones that would benefit from a contract are the marginal development guys.

Because you can't play unless you have a contract?

Not just anyone can walk up and play for the Houston Texans.  It takes.....a contract.

With the new NCAA pay world, why shouldn't it be the same?

and what 4 or 5* is going to be constrained by a contract when he can go to another school and get what he wants?

the pros have contracts, collective bargaining, etc. because they are employees. like actual employees of the organization. college players right now are students.

And are the athletes employees

I'm talking about all schools. Not Arkansas unilaterally implementing contracts.

Got to get a GM and organizational staff to handle money and personnel issues.  A guy like Sam is barely adequate at coach, but it's almost cruel to force him to deal with money and all that.  Plus, I think it creates friction if a player believes a coach is the one not getting him paid.  If we had a GM and personnel staff, the coach could be an advocate for his players getting paid.

I love Arkansas but we have always been kind of amateur hour on so many things.  A school is going to need a slick professional outlook and presentation to compete nowadays.  We need to spend way more on administration with football and other revenue sports.  We should probably eliminate some non revenue sports to cover these costs.

Injury, underperformance etc from an 18 yo kids perspective. Kid gets a 1 mil 2-3 year deal and could be more money than his family has ever seen in their life. Just seems like a lot of work on a lot of  teams to rebuild a roster ever year with the whole team being possible free agents.

From what I understand the only way to implement that throughout the sport is collective bargaining.

I think Tuberville has been trying to do it through legislation.

Regardless it has to happen, however.

To fix it we need collective bargaining and transparency.  Contracts that are enforceable, along with knowledge of how much everyone is being paid.

The same bleeding hearts who got us into the NIL mess will complain that it's nobody's business what the players are being paid.  Tell that to every government employee whose salary gets released every year as part of some FOIA request.  Because that's effectively what the players are now...employees, or at least independent contractors (who are also subject to having their prices released via FOIA...which is why I don't do government work).

And if the private schools don't want to make their data available, that's fine too.  Make it a condition of being allowed into the CFP, March Madness, etc.

Isn't there currently a prohibition against performance clauses tied to NIL money?

I don't think there should be, but I thought that's what I remembered hearing somewhere along the way.

yes. and i don't think performance clauses that penalize are something that will be a thing. nil has nothing to do with any contracts players have with the school that might (will) happen in the future.

pro contracts have nothing like that. you get a base and then incentives. do coaches give back salary for missing a bowl or the playoffs?

Not performance per se, but opting out should definitely be cause for a pay cut.

Just to clarify this...
You might be able to FOIA what might my company bills/charges the government for me (depending on the type of contract), but you can't FOIA what I make. For the record, my amount is MUCH less than what my company bills.

If you were an individual contractor like these players we could know your amount paid.

The players should be classified as employees if we are being honest.

Don't have any issue with kids making money for NIL.  That's not money in your pocket but was money either going to the foundation or school or under the table.  It's the easy portal that's fucking shit up.

The game will settle down into an NFL developmental superconference, a midtier with less money, and on down to D3.  End the rise of calling these players students.  Make them 1099 contractors, Rev share can work towards a salary cap, install certified agents and have standardized contracts.  Their education scholarship can be an additional perk included for those that want it.  Get the nfl to help fund it; they need a developmental league as players aren't ready to play these days because of the simple game they play these days.

To me making them students is the last bit of leverage schools have to get better control on this. AND at some point the academic side of things is going to wake up and do something about this if they even can.

So enter "restricted free agent" into the chat. I think in the near future we'll have something like that. Some kind of terms and conditions within the NLI that designates that the school has the first right of refusal for the student-athlete to enter into the transfer portal (they own the rights to the player) and that the kid can transfer without restriction AFTER he/she has graduated and is otherwise restricted. The kid can "test the waters" but the parent school would have the rights to that player in order to match the offer. This could potentially even lead to agreed value trades. In return that student-athlete is guaranteed a full ride scholarship (must actually go to class) and a percentage of revenue allotment thru NIL based on performance on and off the field and/or perceived value entering the season. Hell let the kid decide when he signs his NLI what kid of NLI it will be. Performance vs Agreed Value.

There are so many ways to go with this and it all starts at the ground floor level. If you are a 5 star kid coming into a situation your leverage is going to be real good and therefore maybe you'd want a Performance based NLI where as a kid that's a 3 star maybe wants that Agreed Value deal. Hell I don't know I just think that's where this needs to go in some way.
