Actually I think a guy ran the camp.

You would think they would have weather radios on all the time and emergency or weatherman to update them to bad weather.

Hell, weather app on my phone alerts me to bad weather nowadays. Most campsites have wifi these days, so they should have gotten some notice.

i agree. while it's fair to say no one knew exactly how much rain was coming, alerts for possible flash floods were put out there. I believe the term "rain bomb" was also used by the local weather guys.

i was in the north austin area (georgetown) over the holiday and the local guys were telling everyone to keep their heads up for flash flooding.

at the actual camp itself why were precautions not taken at 6:10 the night before?

Hindsight is a bitch.  But I think this is actually a valid point.  It sounds like the Mystic camp had cabins all up and down the riverbank, some higher up than others.  The kids in the higher ground cabins all made it out fine.

A good policy for a flash flood warning would be to at least double-bunk for the night and put the kids in the lowest cabins in with the kids in the upper cabins.  It could have been a fun thing and a memory made.  Its kind of fun to be scared of severe weather, when it doesn't kill you.

The truly shit thing is per abc news that camp mystic had received alerts, they even at one point awoke nurses ect as water was coming through the buildings and yet they did nothing and did not think to move kids to higher ground.

That camp director died, but you can bet that property will be sold off to satisfy a big lawsuit.

last camp I went to as a kid was Snow Springs church camp and that ended with a tornado. I can vividly remember looking right up at 3 little tornadoes that were probably no more than 50 yards away and at the time when you are a 11 year old or whatever I was it might as well have been 50 inches. Luckily we got in the church van and trees were falling as we left the area. Nobody died but it fucked that camp up pretty good. The bunk house we were in was destroyed and we were lucky to leave when we did..the counselors were on top of shit. 


This flood stuff I'm not sure how much advance warning there was. I know they don't call it flash flood for no reason.
