Private, individual negligence resulted in the death of these campers. I would imagine 3 inches of rain up river would be concerning and dangerous. This was a simple math equation that people should have been awake to solve. Tragic and I can't even imagine what these parents are going through.

Remember the source.  It is Austin firefighters or rescue teams bitching.  Most liberal town in Texas, not surprising at all.  And Austin is an hour away from where they were, or at least 45 minutes.  And water came up 26 ft in 45 minutes.

No worries CP, we're fine. That much water in that amount of time caused a bit of erosion damage and one of the local lakes had a dam fail but the soil is so sandy here that the flooding was short lived. Sunny and back to a H.I. of 100 again today.

the firefighters/rescue teams are complaining that they weren't allowed to mobilize until today. what does the fact that austin is liberal have to do with that?

Was this place susceptible to this sort of flooding and it's happened in the past? Idk if that was also the case with Albert Pike, but these sound eerily similar. If so, I think in both cases, someone local or involved should have been in charge of better weather monitoring and knowledge.

Or,was this a case of the above not necessarily being true to this extent, but they did all they could and saved the majority of people? It sounds like it was a very large group and could have been even worse, not that it's not already a terrible tragedy.

It's a little confusing.  The Albert Pike situation was truly a 1 in a hundred years deal.  As I understand it, some flash flooding in this area of Texas is not that unusual.  But we are talking a few feet.  Not 26 feet.

THIS is exactly the problem. The overhype of weather for ratings has the public tone-deaf to these warnings.

We get so many Amber alerts and weather warnings in the middle of the night, we pay no attention whatsoever to them. 

This stuff happens from time to time.  It just had the bad luck of happening in the middle of the night on the busiest weekend of the year. 

If it had happened after daylight, the only fatalities would probably have just been people who tried to cross low water bridges in cars.
