Quote from: SwahiliSteve on Jul 08, 2025, 08:38 AMThe truly shit thing is per abc news that camp mystic had received alerts, they even at one point awoke nurses ect as water was coming through the buildings and yet they did nothing and did not think to move kids to higher ground.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "no one did anything despite water running through the buidling" is a bullshit story.

One of our attornies owns a house in a 18 house community on the river.  All the houses are gone.

A set of neighbors were son/DIL/2 kids and a few houses down the hill were the grandparents.  They let the kids stay with the grandparents that night.  Said that the grandfather woke up to the alerts and opened his door to find water rushing into the house.  He sent a text to the son/DIL saying they were evacuating, grabbed a canoe to get the kids out of the house, and that was the last anyone has heard from them.  Their bodies still have not been found.

I have not seen anything to indicate that a rise of that magnitude was predicted, at least till late at night.  Maybe you can enlighten me.

there were 22 warnings snentbby the National weather service for Kerr county and Kerr like area that included escalating language about the urgency of the situation.

The first was sent to Kerr and bamdera counties at 1:14am. 3:35am NWS sends repeat of earlier warning and says be mindful if you are relatively to streaks or creeks which can become killers in heavy rain.
4:03am same counties including mystic camp gets messages again like the above but added seek higher ground now and that this is a particularly dangerous situation. At same time NWS in Austin issued flash flood emergency. They then send another at 5:34am saying seek higher ground this a a flash flood emergency.

When exactly did the mystic camp get hit with the bulk of rain? From 5am on there were multiple emergency messages almost every half hour
Yep. I'm not trying to be a dick about it. It could have lived. It didn't. Not by my choice. -Elvis

I odn't know about you all, but I'm asleep at 1:14 am, 3:35 am, 4:03 am and 5:34 am.

I guess the National Weather Service should have gone door to door.

I've never understood why the need to find fault when it comes to weather events.  Fucking shitty situaiton.  Support those that lost loved ones.

Going forward camps with kids need to have the equivalent of a fire guard in an army barracks. Maybe they do already?
Somebody awake at all times to monitor weather and other issues. You can't just have everybody asleep and nobody watching the weather that has been forewarned to be bad.
Obviously you can't predict 29' rise of the river in 45 minutes. Maybe have a person or security assigned to watch up river.
The same people demanding everyone embrace your beliefs, have zero tolerance and condemn another for embracing theirs.  Oh, the irony.

DRYANKNPULL

Somebody that was in charge of these children's well being should have asked themselves what happens if it rains 3 inches an hour like they are forecasting.

DRYANKNPULL

This is right now. If you are responsible for young campers sleeping in flash flood susceptible spots in this area, you should consider taking some action.

as early as wednsday alerts went out.

the morning after officials were saying it was "an act of god", "no one could have predicted happening". yesterday it's the nws who is at fault. which is it? here's a timeline with quotes from state officials.

here's the thing I've noticed though....people in everyday life don't ever bother to check weather or watch it daily. I'm baffled all the time how no one checks shit with regards to the weather however I check it non stop daily just having a dad who farmed and was weather obsessed

I get that. And people in everyday life don't have dozens of children sleeping where flash floods occur while there are copious amounts of warning that this could be bad. Your dad's livelihood revolved around the weather. Every farmer I know is keenly aware of what is happening with the weather. I don't know people that house grade schoolers in flash flood prone areas, but I would hope they would pay attention to ominous flood watches and warnings.

Floods warnings are different than tornado warnings. If I'm under a tornado watch in my county, I'm certainly aware that I need to pay attention. If a warning is issued for my county, I can look at radar for 15 seconds and determine if I'm in danger. With flash floods, you know precisely where it's going to hit. People that choose to be in these areas have to be keenly vigilant. I think most are. I think those housing children in these areas should be.

You can't predict those freak things but you have a much better chance of having time to act if you do exactly as you said and make the decision to have someone on watch around the clock.  Did they know about the Special Discussion being issued at 6:10 on Thursday?  If so, they should have decided right then to have someone (or a group working in shifts) up all night watching the weather.  If they didn't know, why not?

I do some Sunday security stuff at church a lot of weeks.  For the last 18 months I have been pestering the shit out of them for contingency plans... In case of tornado, in case of fire, in case of fire that's blocking one main point of egress, someone gets hit by a car, someone grabs their chest and collapses in the hallway from a heart attack... all stuff that's more likely than a mass shooting, and what does the church want to do instead?  Have some local police come do a powerpoint bullshit slide show on what to do if there's an active shooter.  I only know where the AEDs and a first aid/trauma kit are located in the building because I found them myself.  Has anyone else had any training at using them?  Hell if I know.  Has any of the staff or a group of volunteers practiced together at how to coordinate an evacuation of the building, or in the case of a tornado moving everyone into safer areas?  I know for a fact they haven't.

A friend of mine who has seen combat and handled emergencies on a few continents now likes to say that people don't take most threats seriously until they become personal - until something happens to them or someone close to them.  They'll get scared of the idea of being shot, but they'll overlook a lot of things that are more likely to take place.  That's what happened here.  People can blame whoever they want whether it's the President of the United States, the Governor of Texas, the Austin Fire Chief, weather folks who seem to cry wolf too often, or God himself, but at the actual camp itself why were precautions not taken at 6:10 the night before?

Where were the law enforcement and emergency personnel? You would think they would go around with bullhorns or something since they had plenty of warning. There were fuckups in several areas. There's no way I don't check the weather if my kid was there and call and pitch a fit until they got them out.

This will piss off some people but the fact that it was a girls camp, I'm sure women were in charge.

Actually I think a guy ran the camp.

You would think they would have weather radios on all the time and emergency or weatherman to update them to bad weather.

Hell, weather app on my phone alerts me to bad weather nowadays. Most campsites have wifi these days, so they should have gotten some notice.

The dildo of consequence, rarely arrives lubed.

I'm not sure what kind of camps yall went to, but no one is going to be on a radio all hours of the night.

I went to brook hill....we weren't on a river. I don't even remember it ever even raining the 6 years I went. I think if it's raining all fucking night and you're on a river you're gonna be monitoring things. If not that's nuts

DRYANKNPULL

I remember a decade ago when my kids were grade/middle school aged. They came out with something that I wasn't familiar with at the time called a pds and Barry described it as conditions being ripe for it to be a motherfucker. I just went and got my kids from school a little early. There ended up being several tornadoes around. The past several springs some local schools have dismissed early because it looked like severe weather was going to hit right at school bus time. When you think of all of the other bullshit that goes on in disrupting kids' education, getting them home safely a little early doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Like Buff was saying, people are supposed to have plans for this stuff. I have a small office with 14 people, but we have plans for and practice for fire, weather and bad guys.

Imagine your brother in law takes your kids camping. You see there is a flood watch for the river they are camping on. You text your bil and express your concern. The next day you find him soaking wet and your kids missing. You can maybe find it in your heart to forgive him someday, but right now you are pissed and it's his fault. He had warning and didn't stay vigilant.
